Black does seem rather stark - are there other black accents in the room?

We have black bookshelves along the wall across from the fireplace, however, they may not be there for long, we’ll be getting new furniture and carpet.

The living room, next to the fireplace, opens to the breakfast-nook and kitchen. We have black weathered chairs at a wood table and dark charcoal grey granite in the kitchen (cabinets are white with dark hardwood floors).

way too dark choose an actual color from the stone.

when asking for help it is best to post a [picture of the entire space context is everything.

how are we to know you have other black elements in the room?

Wondering if going lighter would look good - something closer to the colors in the stone?

from the pic is it already installed? looks rather long.

are you have a tv above? art? anything? what kind of furniture is in the room?

looks like the wood is red oak, but I wouldn't pick anything in the red stain family.

Ebony appears out of context, which is why I want to see the room. if you have black windows, a black wall, black furniture, then it would blend in.

I like something like this, but not as red.

perhaps you could mix up a stain that is a weathered gray, add a smidge of the ebony, maybe some dark walnut. do a custom stain.

here are some gray/brown stain colors in a custom mix. play around w/these. the others are paint colors for the room (if you need any)

you stone isn't too far off from this coloring. imagine if this was a black mantle. the warmer wood tone seems to work better. (but again, w/o seeing your room I don't know)

Another vote for not going much darker than an actual tone from the stone. A walnut-gray mix would be nice.

Just read that you are ripping up the rug. Consider staining the mantel the color of the new wood floor.
