Island Hood for Low Ceilings

We are purchasing an island hood for cooktop. The issue is we have low ceilings. Our ceilings are barely 8 ft' and I'd like a hood that comes down 12-18" from the ceiling. The Thermador that comes free with the cooktop is this one but it comes down too low: https://www.build.com/product/summary/1655867?uid=3918175&jmtest=gg-gbav2_3918175&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiA75itBhA6EiwAkho9e6tY-x9l6-VQvTkSmpJGek4E9XZoapFr05WH98ie6P3Zl1997js61RoCc0cQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Alternatively, I could spend a lot of money on a Vent-a-Hood: https://ventahood.com/index.php/products/premier-magic-lung/ml-island/ml-im-es?id=361&model=EPIH18-242

Any other suggestions? Thank you!

Sidenote - we aren't redoing our kitchen so the cooktop has to stay in the island. We are moving from gas to induction. We currently have a downdraft that we HATE so that's not an option.

A hood 30" from the cook IS standard.........and it is fine on the perimeter of the kitchen

It is going to suck rocks over an island.

Too low, a head banger, and we know not the SIZE of the island.

Show the "victim" island and otherwise ? spend the money for something that works and doesn't annoy the hell out of you every single day.

How long will you have this kitchen? ............Divide the cost of the one you know will be better by that number of days: )

I am not exactly sure how you would hit your head on a hood mounted the same height over an island, but not on hit your head the perimeter. If it is mounted at the same distance from the floor and your own height does not shrink and stretch as you move around the kitchen. Same with knocking things off on an island vs the perimeter. The pots are the same distance from the front on both. Maybe people cooking on islands just wave their arms around crazily when they are cooking or something.

This is just one more of those anti island cooktop "facts" that people who don't want you to have an island cooktop come up with.

That said make sure the hood is at least 6" wider than the cooktop, and you could go wider if you want, and get a hood that is properly powered, and mount it at the optimal height according to the manufacturer's specs. Don't go too small or too underpowered or too high or low.

Okay, maybe you don't hit your head! But would you build a soffit at that clearance? No......you would not.

It is why we recommend hanging pendant lighting with a clearance of 36" .

It's a visual, it is comfort, and the middle of a space is different than its walls.

I would say in general that Vent-a-Hoods, because of the way they work and their relatively low CFM (they say they have a higher CFM equivalence)...their recommended height is Lower than many hoods, so it may be too low depending on the height of the people using it. Unless you are concerned about make up air with a higher CFM and need something like a VAH, I would look at other island hood options.

The hood height is 24". If you mount it at the ceiling height, without a duct extension, that is 72" above the floor. That is plenty of room, even for a super tall person. People's heads bend over and become lower as they lean forward.

My ceiling over my peninsula is about 1.5 inches less than 8 feet from the floor. I have 36-inch high countertops. My Wolf Pro Island hood is at 34.5 inches above the counter. The hood canopy is 18 inches high and is supported by a Wolf 6-inch chimney extension that fits the hood.

The issue with VaH "equivalence" specifications for their Magic Lung version hoods is that the squirrel cage fans providing both blower and grease extractor functions have the property that they are more sensitive to flow rate loss with back pressure than other generally conventional blower designs. So their use needs to be considered in the context of the entire ventilation system, both hood to outside, and make-up air to inside.

The distance betwwen the bottom of the hood and the cooktop needs to be between 30” and 36”. That is the measurement you use, NOT how far it comes down from the ceiling. A distance less than 30” above the cooktop creates a claustrophobic feeling over the cooktop, not only in appearance, but if you have for example a tall pot for heating soups and similar, it will be cramped when you need to peer into it and stir it.

Any hood that says it should be mounted less than 30” above the cooktop does so because its cfms are so low and anemic that the hood needs to be lower than standard to suck up anything. An island hood needs more cfms than a wall hood does because it does not have adjacent cabinets that would help corral the smoke.

The hoods you linked are 36” wide. How wide is your cooktop? An island hood needs to be 6” wider than the cooktop. If your cooktop is 30” wide, then a 36” hood is good. If your cooktop is 36” wide, then you need to buy a 42” hood.
