What to do with this sitting room?

We have a large sitting room adjacent to our bedroom with a walkout balcony.Currently, we have a dresser, a black drum accent table and an accent chair in that space. I got a 5x8 rug for Christmas but I'm afraid it's too small for the space. I am inspired by my gray duvet cover, furry blanket and throw pillow. The area next to the windows gets decent sunlight and I would like to add some plants in the bedroom sitting area. I'm not sure what to put on that long blank wall. A bookshelf with plants? Large artwork? Painting that space means painting the entire large bedroom and sitting room, which I'm not sure l'm ready to do just yet, but I toyed with a deeper blue (Nocturne blue) from Behr and it looked beautiful. maybe curtains on the sides of the windows to give it some texture and warmth?
The light fixture is ready to be retired.
It’s too stark now. I’m more of an eclectic/contemporary girl.
I'm open to ideas!

Thank you! I like the idea of the shelves. I do need some storage space and love open shelves.

The spaces are already very clearly divided - different flooring, different ceilings, one is furnished, the other mostly unfurnished. Look for ways to unify the spaces while creating separate zones. The fireplace and artwork is positioned to be enjoyed in both areas.

Yes, you definitely need a larger area rug, the small one emphasizes the flooring difference. Your idea about drapes is good too. They'll provide texture and warmth, not to mention darkening the room for better sleep. The windows on either side of the bed have mismatched panels, dress all three windows with the same color drapes.

One possibility is to place a desk/console table on the long wall with art above, flanked by two shelf units where plants and decor can be displayed above and plastic bins stowed in closed storage below. The pet beds can go underneath the desk/console table or alternatively, in a cabinet specifically made for pets. Wayfair has quite a few.

Get another chair and ottoman and create a seating group under the chandelier. You may want to layer a faux animal skin on top of the rug for a bit of print.

Easy, instant improvements: All of the loose items on the floor and table tops should be put away. The space has so much potential to become your own private retreat and clutter is a zen killer. Adding a bed skirt will cover the plastic bins underneath and making the bed will show off the duvet cover you appreciate. Lastly, the tall plant in the corner has a disproportionately puny pot. Get a larger, lightweight pot, stack some empty boxes inside so the plant can be elevated and cover the surface with moss so there aren't big gaps showing.

These are probably too large for your space but smaller versions can be found.

Note more color than a single pillow:

Thank you for all the great ideas. I’ve been struggling to tie the two areas together.
(I’m trying to decide if I like either of the curtain panels. That’s why they are different)

Lol, thanks! It makes sense now, couldn’t figure out what in the world was going on.

Perhaps look at adding a larger rug, some window treaments, and decide what you'd like the purpose of this space to be. It can indeed be a sitting area, or a plant propagation area, a reading nook, or even a yoga/exercise space. Below are some ideas for you on what could possibly work in this area:

There is a lot of potential in that small space in your bedroom. You could perhaps do a reading nook, home office, small TV area, or a music/recording area. Here are some pictures from some designs of ours that might inspire you more.
