Flooring help!

last year

New to us house. Exisiting cherry wood floors are too damaged to restore so taking all out. This is flooring throughout all common areas and possibly in master bedroom too. Cabinets are staying but granite (currently dark green and backsplash are going). These are all wood look tiles because we have two boys and the house has a pool so actual wood isn’t the best choice for us. We also don’t care for wood look vinyl etc. I’m currently leaning towards the middle one with a runner up being the long brown one. Wanted thoughts on if there is enough contrast etc.

Your cabinets are pretty. Unfortunately the current floors and your tile samples do not complement the wood color. The three you don't care for are not worthy of consideration. If it's grey, throw it away. ;-) See in the second photo how the panel in the corner looks a nuttier brown? That might be a good direction to go. Or skip the wood look altogether and look for a large format tile. The photo here looks good: https://www.hunker.com/12003098/what-color-floors-match-light-maple-cabinets-in-the-kitchen

Slate could be a really pretty - and practical - choice too. https://www.houzz.com/photos/transitional-kitchen-and-bath-transitional-kitchen-austin-phvw-vp~26783118

Yea, I agree -- the tones of the tile are off with the cabinets. Agree with the slate suggestion, but if you that route avoid the busy, multi-colored slate tiles, just stick with one color. Something in the charcoal grey range would look good, but avoid anything too strongly blue-toned.

Dog doesn't like any of the samples.

I like the middle one as well. But it’s a bit too stripey for me. I’d look for something in that color with less variation

Great suggestion on using a neutral background for judging the samples! I’ll try that tomorrow. Personally- I don’t like slate or most tile so wood look is really the only option we are considering. Thank you for input.

Buy a box of the middle one and lay it out to see if you like how variegated it is. If too variegated, than use that tile color to shop around for one a bit less variegated.

I think the slight variation will help pick up the colors of your cabinets and will look good.

Daltile's new Acreage line in Stetson would be a great choice with your cabinets. https://www.daltile.com/products/Wood-Look/Acreage/Stetson

Or Emerson Wood Butter Pecan. https://www.daltile.com/products/Wood-Look/Emerson-Wood/Butter-Pecan

Is there a less grey version of number 5? would be good to consider some tile that looks like tile instead of fake wood tile.

Thanks for comments and suggestions! Putting a white background behind made a big difference. I bought a box of our favorite and laid it out to get an idea of the grain pattern, etc. I don’t lay tile or floors so pardon the wonky stacking. Thoughts on if too much grain pattern? I have not had success at finding anything else in this color family.

Sorry but they are not convincing wood and they are so short. When I’ve done wood look floors they are four feet long. This is going to be very busy

This link is useful in coordinating wood homes,

None of your choices go with your cabinets.

lighter floors are looking a heck of a lot better than anything so far. you can anchor your space with darker counters or a patterned granite if you want...much nicer to have options with the counter.

Faux wood next to real wood always looks a bit forced to me. I highly prefer faux stone next to real wood. A ceramic tile will handle the water and dog just fine.

Thanks! We have decided against the shorter tiles. @eld6161 I had actually read that whole article previously and thought that my cabinets had warm yellow undertones (they’re a natural maple but with a coffee glaze or something like that) so the floors seemed to have the same and then the cabinets don’t have a very strong grain so the grain in the floor wouldn’t compete/clash. What color would you say my cabinets undertones are? What about the floors? Here is a pic of the floor we are currently leaning towards (there is only one plank and the rest were the shorter planks) I am going to go tomorrow to buy a box and lay out, etc. I appreciate the suggestions for other flooring options but we are really set on wood look tile. We’ve put it in, in two previous homes and love the warmth and look of wood with the durability of tile.

I circled the new first choice. In this pic they don’t look that different but in person the new choice is darker and less busy.

I think you are correct in assessing the tone of your cabinets. What worked against those tile samples was that they had a fair amount of grey in them.

In what is hopefully my last sample purchase. I laid out this tile (6x36) inch boards. I feel like it works really well but open to thoughts.
