what type of professional do I need?

I’m not sure who would be the best professional to contact to ask about groundwater and the water table. I have concerns about the possibility of our basement flooding. It never has but the amount of rain has only increased each year. Our home already has a French drain system and a sump pump. The area that we live it seems like we’re getting more and more rain as well as groundwater and pooling areas in our yard. Last storm the sump pump went on for days. Would an environmental engineer be the best person to consult? I’ve been told we have the best sump pump on the market along with a back up battery if the power is lost but I’m trying to be proactive.

We are building into a hillside and just had a Geotechnical Engineer assess the stability of our ground to see if we can build a home with a full basement. They drilled holes and collected soil samples for testing. Did some stability models and gave us a gigantic report that will guide us on how to safely build our home. They gave their recommendations about water infiltration, erosion control during wet weather, etc. Since your home is already built they may or may not be able to help you, but I would think so. I'm sure either way they could give you some info to guide you in the right direction for your issue.

Civil engineer; or try your local water company. There are certified water damage specialists too

Thank you. We don’t have town water, but perhaps I could ask a nearby municipal dept. for guidance. I’ll look into a civil engineer.

In our part of New England we have “rainy season” much sooner in the year than in the past. Little snow anymore, but rain storms with high winds are frequent.

Where I am, the county health department handles issues relating to septic systems, wells, and groundwater. Perhaps there is a similar department in your area.

Whether or not the amount of rain has increased each year, you may be facing more water issues because of more home building/development in your area.
