I’d suggest a couch and 2 chairs or even a third chair by window to accommodate more people and improve conversation. Measure out the space and buy appropriately sized pieces.

Keep the sectional. No one ever wants two people on a loveseat.

Two chairs and a love seat only accommodate two. - would just be what they prefer. As the sectional accommodates your family, maybe just add an additional comfy chair by window.

A chair to the right of the fireplace could be added, but I don’t think you can fit any more seating in that space. The large sectional is perfect for seating/conversation in that space…especially for a family with children. And if your children are young, they don’t sit still and they are usually in your face to communicate with you. 😊I wouldn’t sacrifice comfortable generous seating for more adult conversational seating in a home like yours. TV viewing would be better if tv was placed on side wall at lower level.

It looks as if your hearth is high enough to support cushions for casual seating when the fireplace is cold. We find that such seating is great for conversation.

Personally, I'd put the art over the fireplace and put the TV on the long wall, much lower and to the left of where the art is currently. Maybe set it on the console table but even that looks a little high to me. Hard to tell.

I do not know how anyone can watch a TV above a fireplace. Maybe I just watch too much TV.

Keep the sectional for your sized family. Do not put the TV over the fireplace. Keep it on the wall it is on. If you feel more seating is needed think about adding cushioned bench seats under your windows with storage drawers underneath. Always need more storage. Add a big square cushy upholstered ottoman or even those coffee tables with pull out seating for the kids.

You probably have room for 2 sofas and 2 chairs . IMO sectionals are the most horrible seting for more than the 2 people who got arm rests . 2sofas and 2 chairs give you 8 seats in a pinch and only 2 that do not get arm rests . I think if you move the one soafa back intot he space no sifa table it could work and for sure better for conversation .So glad the TV is not above the FP but it should be hung lower .

Patricia ... you are talking adults here. She has 4 children who I doubt need armrests, I assume they will be the users most of the time along with the parents who each would have one armrest if needed.

I don't understand the obsession with armrests. People don't like to be crowded in; 3 on a sofa is a rarity and it's not because of the lack of an armrest in the center. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen anyone USE an armrest on a sofa with normal height armrests. Only partners would ever sit next to one another on a love seat (or maybe dear friends).

And the TV IS above the fireplace. Clearly.

Children grow. A sectional might work great for a family of 6 for a few years, but it won't be long before bodies are bigger, and children have aged out of wanting to cram close to mom, dad, and each other. At that point smaller sofas (large enough to each seat 2) and a couple of arm chairs will be something OP needs for family night as well as for entertaining adult friends.

I'm with Patricia--armrests are everything. A low one is an actual arm rest, and a great support for a pillow when you are taking a couch nap. A higher one gives you a nice corner to snuggle into. If you don't think arm rests matter--do you really sit in the middle of the sofa when you are the only person in the room?

Sectionals have as many armrests as sofas. And yes, I often sit in the center of my sectional. And when I sit on the end, I don't use the armrest.

If you prefer the idea of a separte sofa and loveseat or armchairs, then I think they’d work well in the space But I don’t think you need to make that change. Sectionals are great for families and even for guests. You won’t get more seating from a sofa/loveseat than a sectional.

I like the suggestion to add a chair in the corner and to consider putting art over the fireplace and TV above the console. If you do leave it as is, both could be moved lower. Definitely move the art lower on your wall.

Keep the sectional. Put a small round table/chairs next to the fireplace (kitchen side) and then a comfy reading chair or some poofs on the other side. The poofs can be used also for storage and both kids and adults can use them as needed.

I have nothing to add. I think your living room and setup is comfortable and lovely!

Iphone tip: perhaps the problem is 1) slow shutter speed due to low light: if so be sure you are on photo” from the tabs at bottom of screen; 2) phone lenses are dirty: use a lens cleaning solution on a microfiber cloth, available at a pharmacy or big box store usually in the eye drops aisle, gently clean lenses DO NOT use window cleaner, nor paper towel, only microfiber

I like the idea of a longer darker sofa table, and the TV plus the picture being lowered. However, as for the picture, there is another one going up the stairs and it appears to be the same size and possibly compatible with the other. If this is the case, the stairs picture could be hung below the wall picture to make a better look for the wall.

Keep the sectional and get a swivel chair for the right side of the fireplace. I agree you need a longer piece behind the sofa. The simple consoles shown by BeverlyFLAdenizer would look great.

Have you tried flipping the sectional so that one side faces the fireplace and the other side faces the kitchen? then put two swivel chairs on the kitchen side of the room facing the sectional with a small table between them, conversational and plenty of seating. not sure if theres enough room for that furniture piece on the long wall but maybe it could be reversed and set against the back of the sectional if its not taller than the sectional, and if theres room to walk between it and the wall, i love moving furniture around. Look at different arrangements. it will come to you what works best

It would be great if the TV could go over the buffet table instead of over the fireplace. It is much too high. Suggesting you exchange the piece of art that is over the buffet table for the TV. Also, remove that one small picture to the right of the buffet table, it would be better off somewhere else. It throws the balance off. You have a beautiful house. Best wishes.

I like the sectional as it is directly across from the fireplace with the tv mounted above the fireplace. Perhaps you could add a swivel chair or two in the livingroom.

I will say YES! Sectionals are really limited in how they can be placed in a room. Sofas, loveseats, chairs allow much greater flexibility.

Your layout is almost exactly like mine in that area except i have the entrance behing my sofa separated by a wall where i put my smaller desk. Ignore the tons of decor I have..I'm a little maximallist..lol....Keep your sectional..no sense in wasting money when you could use it for other things you need. Move that tv off of the fireplace! It is way too high and it never looks good unless its a very modern setup with a lower mantle. Put the tv on the wall or on its feet on the sideboard. It can be used as a media cabinet. If you move it to the very left you will have room for your lamp and whatever other decor. Put a chair next to sideboard in the corner by the window with a small table and lamp. it doesnt need to be facing the tv...not all seating needs to face a tv. You could put a dresser or bar cart or another matching table in front of the window opposite the fireplace to balance out the area. Or you could use your sideboard for its original purpose in that area to function with your dining space and buy a real media cabinet for the tv. Also a small round coffee table looks good with a section or 2 small round nesting tables. Mine is too big but i'll get around to replacing it with something a little smaller one of these days.

I would definetly put something behind the couch separating the dining area from the seating area...a slim bench? a slim sofa table? you could put 2 small ottomons under the sofa table for extra seating. Put a lamp on sofa table for lighting and some decor, and use the floor lamp somewhere else...i use mine in my office. The area to the right of the sideboard is too much space so if you could, slide it over a bit to where its still comfortable to view tv which shoud work if you put the tv on the left side. Then you could put a plant or ? and put a small grouping of art. you could also put shelving on each side of the tv but i put mine above because i have alot of art and collectibles that i love. Anyway, just a different perspective and some ideas. Take care
