We need to see more of your living room and your furniture. What is the style of your house?

It’s a ranch style home. We’re remodeling the kitchen with shaker style white cabinets and white/gray countertops. The outside of the house is the same stone as the fireplace. The windows are black trimmed. The door handles and hinges are going to be black.

These are right after we started tearing stuff out

I found an old picture that showed my furniture pre tear out, and another with the house exterior.

The purple trim will become white, the bedroom door is moving a few feet closer to the fireplace, and furniture isn’t a consideration right now.

Do you use the fireplace? Is it wood burning or gas?

If you use it and it's wood burning, you need to install fireproof surface on the floor in front of it since you removed the ledge. So ceramic tile or stone slab.

Do you like the stone surround? Or do you want to replace it?

What will the floor be in the living room?

The shiplap boat has sailed, so unless you love that look, i would choose something else for the wall. What kind of flooring are you planning to put down?

A call to your local building department should help determine what you need in front of the fireplace to meet code.

If this was my house, I would knock off the remaining stone and tile the surround instead, install a slab or tile on the floor in the front and add a simple wood mantle. Something like this:

I think you need to answer some of the questions here , for sure what type of FP this is? Does it even functionat all? I do not like that stone and It does look like the exterior that you posted . Your syle in side is what drives the FP design and I love MCM that is not it. I think without more info hard to advise. Poat all the answers to the questions as you have been doing in comments . I think my first step would be to have it checked to see if it is actaully working. It seem to be in an odd place right next to the entry door which will make arranging furniture a bit awkward. Not sure what you mean about the bedroom door. The furniture is always a consideration . You have removed what little hearth there was so I will assume this is woodburning at least at some time in the past . The stone can be removed and replaced with many options but the type of FP will drive those choices. BTW shiplap ship has sailed and sunk so IMO not a choice .

It is a gas fireplace, though it may also be able to burn wood on top- right now it has a permanent fake log and gas jets.

I was explaining that the bedroom door on the left if you’re facing it is moving closer. Furniture will be new.

It sounds like you like the modern farmhouse style. Black window trim, shiplap, black hardware, white shaker cabinets. What will the new floor be? Whatever you are doing with the floor will have to be considered before making fireplace suggestions.

How do you plan on arranging the furniture in that room? Will there be a TV above the fireplace?

I want it to go along with the ranch style house, but be more updated/modern without being super flat. I’m thinking of removing the rest of the stone and covering it with white marble style porcelain tile from floor to ceiling, and a wood shelf/mantle right above it, and trying to find a large tile for the floor that can be a single piece. Does that seem like it would go with a ranch style home? There isn’t enough space to do the wood corbels on either side.

Marble to the ceiling would be way to modern for what seems like a fairly small, casual ranch. Can you do some searching on Houzz and post some examples of fireplaces you like?

How much closer are you moving the door? That space seems super tight as it is.

Hi! We are just about to finish our fireplace makeover. Will be painting the mantel white to match the baseboards. We’re fretting about a paint color for the walls, but that’s another story…

So looks to me like your preference would be a modern, streamlined design.

In that case, remove the rest of the stone, and once the door is moved, find a tile you like. I still think that tiling just the surround and installing a mantle but not going up to the ceiling with the tile will be a better option.

Si this is where we are. I need to know what color to paint the wall by Monday or even tomorrow so maybe I should try my first post on Houzz.

@ann baum Wall color is such an open ended question. What color do you want your space to be? The tile is very neutral, so I would assume you would be happier in a lighter color than the existing walls. Do you like green?
