Bathroom upgrade

My bathroom has not been remodeled since we purchased the home 30 years ago. The only change made was a countertop and shower install. I am ready to gut this bathroom!!

You start with a drawing, not hen scratches on a grocery pad.

All the walls, the window, the door entry. Every foot and inch of every single thing.

Are you willing to move plumbing? What is your budget?

Add all below along with any inspo pics.

Your information isn't quite enough, nor good enough.

Do that and return below: ) in a comment box

Hi Jan, thank you for responding. I am not willing to change the plumbing. I would like to keep the cost around $5,000.

Do you want/need improved functionality or are you more interested in aesthetics?

Bathrooms are crazy expensive to remodel so you’ll need to be very savvy with your budget - if it were me, I would spend my money on new tile floors, new vanity and mirror and potentially a new shower door depending on the options -

a good prep step is to empty the room of all accessories, shelves, wall hanging etc and look at the room as a clean slate - are you interested in painting the wood walls?

Regardless of where you live, $5,000 is much too low for 'gut this bathroom' remodel. Especially in an older home that may have some surprises waiting inside walls and under flooring. You may be able to save some money by doing work yourself, opting for a prefab shower unit instead of custom tiling, and vinyl flooring. I'd begin the project by assessing what repairs may be required before planning the finishes.

    Paint it white

    Lose the valance

Perhaps a different tile on the floor

MAYBE even a counter top change

Clean up all the clutter and doo dads

Get a taller and larger medicine cabinet

    Add some art.

Budget is too restricted for a gut : )- even on diy dollars

I love the homey cottagey feel (which is good because I recently bought a house with lots of knotty pine) so I would keep the wood. What is the condition of the vanity? If the box is great, I would look at new doors only. I would get a quote on new flooring. Then what makes you crazy?

We had a storage cabinet over the toilet in our last home and it provided lots of needed storage. That would be the first functional change I would make.

    (Not a pro)

    Edit to myself

The Biggest issue and WASTE is entry and door swing. You need alllll of the 5k for lipstick to the little piggy. Which would include a new vanity.

The labor is yours or?? But more storage, etc and a much better look is possible

You want the glam bath? Triple your budget

Either way? Change the swing ! /entrance

What is your style preference and the style of the rest of your home? What goals are you trying to accomplish with your remodel. I do agree with other - a 5K budget may limit what you can go and a "gut" is probably not feasible unless you get some really good deals. Good luck!

A gut redo would cost between $15,000-30,000.

Agreed. $5k is not going to get you a gut. Instead, make a priority list of the things you want and need the most. Storage? New vanity? Cosmetic lift to a different style?

Start looking online at vanities you like and the cost of shower doors and you will see how expensive materials are without any installation labor included.

We took out an acrylic shower and put in a tiled shower with a nice door. That alone was $7,000 and that was 8 years ago!

I agree with Jan re door swing…..that’s the first thing I noticed. I don’t think you would have to spend $4600 (Jan’s estimate) on vanity, top and faucets…..you can probably find something online (as a “set”) for around $3000; I think it’s pretty clear that $5 k won’t even come close to getting you a new bathroom, but much will obviously depend on labor and the type of materials you choose. We’re redoing our 3rd guest bathroom right now, and tile (not a budget tile) alone, including most of the Schlüter materials, was over $8000. (Our bathroom is a bit smaller than yours at 47 1/2 sf.) Our other 2 guest bathrooms (one was done pre-COVID, one past) cost around $15 k, with hubby doing demo and installing Schlüter niches and wallboards. Both bathrooms have tub showers and shower curtains rather than glass doors. (We also did our own wall repair and painting, and hubby installed and reversed a new door.) Good luck!

Did say 4800 for a vanity?!

    No….

    scroll up to the drawing..

    2500 vanity asaaaand! ;)

Jan…..I said $4600…..it includes the faucets and top, as I stated. A faucet doesn’t need to cost $300 a piece, and if you buy a vanity with top included (there are even countertop choices)…..I simply added your items up…..in my book adding 2500+1500+600=4600….no?? I merely suggested that IF the OP is trying to reno a small bathroom on a budget, they could find something (the complete thing) for less than $4600. (I DID read what you wrote, but you didn’t read what I wrote…..aaaand…..)

5000 for a total gut? do you plan on doing of the tile work? shower /floor? what about the vanity? have you even priced those out to see where you're at?

a new shower door is easily 800.

Now, if you just want to paint those wood walls, get a new countertop, some $200 cheap sliders, and new vinyl floor, you could do it along w/a cheap tile guy who prob doesn't know how to waterproof.

I could do that bathroom for 5K along w/my contractor husband. But we do all of the labor and I know how to shop for deals.

Bac in 2012 we did this 1980 remodel for 3500 bucks (it was even featured on HGTV Save my bath)

I did everything myself. found all the tile on craigslist and shopped for deals. painted a vintage chest to use as a vanity, found the marble top remnant, deal on the sink, deal on the medicine cabinet. took me a week to tile, but I got it done. some of the tile cuts aren't perfect, but it's still holding up (the house is rental)

These glass doors was the single most expensive thing in here. I could have come in under 3500 if I used a shower curtain.

we even changed the plumbing to a wall mount. Put in a new window too.

(would I have done it like this today? no. no to the mosaics. and vanities are pretty cheap to find now at builders surplus)

Do you know how to DIY/shop for deals?

Because no way you're getting a completely new bathroom unless you know how to do something. You're budget is way off. this isn't 1985.

Hi Beth, the bathroom remodel is gorgeous! My husband is very handy with electrical, plumbing, woodworking, etc. He tore down walls and remodeled our kitchen 10 years ago. I feel like I am pretty good at finding bargains. Looks like I need to do some more research. I know we can’t put tile down because the floor is too uneven (according to professionals), possibly I could paint it??
