Porch post stone bases

Nearly finished with our new house. For various reasons we have decided not to screen in our porch. The porch posts will be 6x6. What size (18x18?) should the stone bases be to make it the right scale? The posts are to be about 8.5 ft tall. We are located in the mountains and want to be in keeping with the environment.

Where are you putting the stone bases? With the deck there they will obviously be just for appearances. I would not use them.

I get your point, but we would like to have the stone bases for purely aesthetic purposes. I've seen it done many times on decks and it looks great. We will use the same stone as the foundation and around the front door.
