Master bathroom layout help please!

last year

I already laid out the bathroom the way I thought it would look good but I guess I need to go back to the drawing board. Bathroom is a gut and making it larger by taking down a wall in the middle. Have a lot of space so would like to have double vanity, freestanding tub and walk in shower. Not super important to have separate toilet room but if a design makes more sense than I am open to it. I am really just looking for advice and no judgement. Thanks in advice to anyone who takes their time to help out!

The wall around the shower is shown as a pony wall with glass because you indicated you wanted it open.

IMO that much glass is just more maintenance. I'd rather tile instead.

Or it could be floor-to-ceiling glass if you prefer that appearance. It's only $$$$

This may be a stupid question but should there be a door going into the toilet/shower area or is it just an opening?

Was going to suggest a layout bascally the same as Beverly's. There's no particular reason to add doors -- most bathrooms in the US are all in one room, with the possible exception of the toilet, if you want that. (I don't, as I sit there to clip my toenails and other things that don't want to be in a tiny closet.) You can have a pony wall to make the toilet feel more private, and the cabinetry on the other wall helps a bit too.

She has put a makeup table on the upper wall, but you could also put any combination of storage, or a bench for sitting on, or a shelf for tub things. You'll need hooks for towels somewhere too.

Overall it's a nice, clean, straightforward layout. A couple thoughts:

Have a lot of space so would like to have double vanity,

Not the dreaded, ubiquitous duplicate sinks ... double the cost, double the upkeep, nothing in return ... though at least with roughly 9' of space, you're not doing it at the expense of drawer space.

I'd consider moving the make-up area over to this side and adding a linen closet on the exterior wall. A person sitting at the make-up area would block access to the shower and the toilet.

A linen closet in this area would be a budget-option (significantly cheaper than the cabinetry linen tower you've drawn in by the make-up table), and even a small one does so much ... I'd make it shallow, maybe 15-18" ... that'd allow you a hamper on the bottom half of the closet /towel and toiletry storage above.

Freestanding tub and walk in shower.

They look good. Is the shower about 4x4? While not luxurious, it will be comfortable. I'd do just what ACM shows in the above picture ... pony walls halfway up. That slashes your glass in half /slashes your glass cleaning in half, and it also allows you ample space for hidden storage niches. You can plan a lovely space all day long, then have ugly shampoo bottles become the focal point. Include more niche space than you think you need.

Very important thought: Where do you see your towels being hung? For the shower + for the tub. Don't forget hand towels at the vanity. I don't see an obvious choice for the shower.

Very important thought: You want to place your shower controls on the pony wall ... not under the shower head. This will allow you to reach in /turn on the water without committing your body to the initial cold spray.

Not super important to have separate toilet room but if a design makes more sense than I am open to it.

No door. If you leave it as you've described now, natural light will extend throughout the space. If you block it off, you'll lose the light and make the space more cumbersome to clean. And it might hold in moisture from the shower.

I would also remove the small wall to the left of the cabinetry straight ahead of the door; it doesn't appear to serve any purpose. Though now that I type that, I wonder if it's necessary for support.

    Other thoughts:

    - I'd consider rotating that cabinetry nearest the toilet so it'd serve the toilet instead of the make-up area ... or at least turn the bottom half. You need space now to store toilet paper, and, especially if you plan to be old in this house one day, you'll likely one day need some sort of medical supplies near the toilet. My grandparents both did ... for different reasons. It'd be so easy to create that now.

    - Where -- if anywhere -- do you see a hamper fitting in?

    - Where will your trash can(s) be placed?

    - What thoughts do you have on window coverings?

    - Do you plan to store cleaning products in the bathroom?

    - I'd consider one large mirror over the vanity. It'd be better to reflect light from the over-tub window. It'll also allow you to see more of yourself /your outfit in the mirror.

The half pony walls with half glass is what I originally envisioned for the space. Light, bright, and open concept.

I have purchased cabinets since the setup won’t change where the sink vanity is being placed, it just made the most sense to use that wall. I have an 3 additional cabinets - tall cabinet (narrow 15” depth), a cabinet that matches that I’m using as a dressing table, and another 12” cabinet - all being the 15” depth, but those can be returned and switched out for other cabinets. I got them from ikea so they’re not assembled yet.

My plan was to use the tall cabinet for extra toiletries, medicine, and cleaning items. I also have a hallway closet that is being used for additional items for our other bathrooms as well. My thought was to have two shelves over the toilet to keep a few towels and wash clothes as needed, most hotels do this and is convenient and doesn’t look bad as long as you fold your towels nice lol. Hand towels I would like to hang on the wall between the two sinks but not definitive on that yet. I’m hoping to have room on the wall when you walk in for towel hooks also or a towel rack that will hang on the pony wall.

This is the layout I put together for the cabinets, I really wanted a fairly decent shower but trying to put the tub, shower, and toilet along the other half of the bathroom is challenging, so I’m not opposed to changing and moving things obviously this is the time to switch things around before demo begins. I am going to talk to my contractor to see what he thinks when he comes here Monday.

Was going to have a small trash can by the toilet and two additional small trash cans that hang on the inside of the sink cabinets.

There is no load baring wall so no support issues.

These are the two ideas I think should work, I think I would have to replace the tall cabinet if I used the makeup area when you first walk in, I just think it looks out of place. The angled shower would obviously look better but just mocked it up to see how it looked.
