When ever I see a situation like this I think simplicity.

Painting the area different colors might work for youre appeal, one color will probably make the area blend in to one type of area.. To me there are lot's of different curves etc that go along with the steps. You need to deal with steps but also make them blend in with the rest of your house not stick out. There are so many ambient lighting choices that could really add to the area and really give it some pop.

Keeping an open mind with this would serve you well I believe. I learned a lot 7 years ago when we bought a beach house close to the ocean. It was neglected and abused but the place fit what we were basically looking for. I did tons of google research about dealing with numerous things for about 8-10 months or more. The inside was a big dirty mess that had never been painted in 22 years. Someone suggested one color throught the house which I origionally didn't care for but decided after looking at wall samples in various types of light that I really liked the idea. I painted all of the walls a very light warm grey with a high light reflective value, doors, window frames and trim are a bright white along with window shades. The whole house looks re-born because potential could be seen and dealt with.
