Add wood features? Stone or???

last year
last modified: last year

Just finishing up this carport addition and new stucco. At a loss for what to do to create curb appeal. Will update door, soffit/fascia and landscaping but need ideas for the ext walls and colors - thanks! (last pic is design idea)

Update: Thank you all for your comments and design ideas!! 1. The stucco is unfinished, thus need for color opinions (my 2 neighbors have a black/white and gray/white home), so I'd like to be the opposite (off whites). 2. Will definitely do the MCM door. 3. Like the idea of large concrete steppers 4. City is Orlando - a ton of MCM here ( I know mine isn't, but trying to achieve the same look). 5. I'd like wood, not sure yet where/how much. 6. Flat roof (non viewable from street)

Mar 2 update - installed soffit/fascia and went with cream/dark bronze. next is tongue and groove planks at entryway on on both entryway corners with 2 black metal lamps.

Mar 30 update - added wood panels/new door

Mar 2 updates...

The short windows are the issue. That's where the money should have been spent.

Yes Beverly, it would have been nice to have a window budget as well - thanks for commenting.

I like your inspiration picture. You could do something like that— wood paneling on wall to left of door and to right of door, perhaps just to the height of the lower window sill, but I’m not sure about that. Definitely a new MCM door similar to the one in your photo. It would break up all the gray stucco. Can that be painted a more welcoming color? Don’t know where you live and I’m not a pro, so I won’t presume to suggest colors.

Rather than embellish the stucco with wood or stone, I'd opt for a MCM front door in a high contrast color (I'd paint that second door the same color as the stucco to reduce confusion as to which door is the front door), MCM lights and house numbers (Neutra font) and then focus on landscaping and a new walkway.

    - a few ideas: I agree a front door that is more modern & welcoming would be nice (with windows for exmple), putting together a nice front patio with furniture and maybe a decorative fence like the inspo photo - more lush landscaping will go a really long way (adding some large potted plans on the patio would be good)

I like the wood and featured paint colors in this Behr Neutral Stylish Modern inspiration picture but the colors in this Cool Modern Marvel inspiration picture might also work and be easy to implement.

love lisedv mock up. I also like the wood one you have.

Are you painting the stucco? that prison gray doesn't fit the mcm look.

Unless you're planning on this look??

    I'd go dark.

    I love this look

do a chartreuse mcm door, some bold planters,

Love the black. like these, and still do the wood slat accent

and of course you need the mcm style door, lights, address.

If those are too dark, try these charcoal grays. w/the wood accents and black trim, black numbers, would look very nice

dark charcoal stucco, black trim, and these cedar plank accents (James Hardie has composite wood planks you can use for no maintenance)

for the landscaping, I'd do the large pavers like shown above, or like this one

the MCM address numbers, I also like the half fence

this one is cute. has similar windows in black. now imagine the opposite colors w/yours.

Imagine this wood application on either end of your house. I also like the wood deck/porch, door, and the walkway

I wouldn't leave that porch plain gray. paint it. stencil it w/a cool design:

tried to show some photoshops. you could do the wood on either end.

plants will make a huge impact with this. do some propper flower beds

I'd go w/this color fence/gate, and black mulch of some type. choose the plantings that go w/your area. (what city are you?)

you could do all of the inset part (including to the left of the door) w/the horiz or vertical slat

    kind of like this

I like lisedv's mockup, but honestly, you could get 90% of the way with just landscaping and maybe a bright color for the front door.

No wood features or stone. Nail the paint colors, get a nice new door, and invest in great landscaping. Llisedv's mock up is evocative of a mobile home. Your house has an appealing sense of balance and proportion. Don't muck it up by overthinking finishes.

What do you consider to be the opposite of black, white, and gray? Just to give us some more direction.

Consider your wood door combo in selecting paint colors. A red-ish or warm undertone wood will look great with blue paints and some greens.

IMO the house leans very much MCM now you take it in that direction easily . As for landscaping this is one of my faves for MCM in fact the door the siding and window trim are all great

The joy of a Florida home is option to use pastels for the exterior. Your inspiration photo drew my eye to the tile roof, so look at the color of your roof as well for inspiration.

  • last year

    I wouldn't paint a house in Orlando, FL a dark, heat-absorbing color.

Several atomic ranches in the neighborhood I was raised in had smaller windows on the front side and large windows and/or glass walls on the back of the home. What you’ve done so far looks good. You could look at atomic-ranch.com for more ideas.

Some inspiration photos. You can absolutely have a white house and a stunning MCM door if you want it. You can also stay in the darker color range and do a deep, deep navy blue. The front door is going to be an important decision as well. Depending on your privacy factor, something with a lot of glass can look fabulous on your house.

I love all the wood ideas, but you first need to decide on a color that will work with any wood accents you’re considering. And a paint job is your first step.

The right shade of green can look fabulous.

Searching mid century modern house exterior images shows all sorts of ideas.

You could incorporated wood in the center of a white house with dark trim like this:

@lisedv: "Here's another option with a more Floridian flair..."

As somebody commented above, I think that gives the house a more mobile home flair.

Jana, can you do the wood on the inset portion around the door/window, and give the stucco a dark blue or green color?

This is it Beth. Blue is courageous, for me more usable inside. Putting the wooden inset makes white door casing too much shouting.

thnks jana. I wouldn't call dark blue 'courageous, or bold', I think it suits the style of the house.

to do this home in a beige or pastel, would be criminal!

Here, leaving the wood placement like you have it, I added some landscaping, a rain chain, red pots to compliment the dark navy, and a pathway w/cement pavers. also, a dark blue mcm door/add plaque

(There's a stucco house in my neighborhood painted this deep midnight/slate blue color. it's so pretty in person. the house isn't a vintage ranch, it's a 1980 tract home, but just the color of that dark blue stucco is stunning. I think it's worth a try. )

Now, can I tweak jana's design a bit??

I did the wood only in the inset portion, (c-below) see how they did it around the door on this one?

    I'd copy that...

In fact, I just saw this pic that's almost identical to your house walter, but done in black.

This is exactly how the pathway should look (diff sizes if you like) These are black window frames, so maybe you could trim out your windows. Notice the fences on the side, the tree, and they did their roof fascia in the same wood trim. This house could benefit from some flower beds under that window, and I'd have done a diff color front door, and painted the porch w/a black stencil design. Other than that, it's really nice.

    Walter K,,,

I took the ideas from this pic by copying this yard. I'd actually do this to a tee if I was redoing your yard! and don't forget the side fences. same wood as you use on the house.

If doing downspouts or rain gutters, get them in the copper color

I also changed up the landscaping, and did the cement pavers as a pathway. (this can be done like shown in the pic, or going off sideways. )

I'd do the house just like this,,, coordinating shade of blue on the door, numbers,

BM Gentlemans Gray would be a good color to try,

along w/Hale Navy, Hague blue, and a few others I've listed

some other nice colors for the door,

Although, I really like a chartreuse or lime green w/dark blue. it really sets it off.

notice the brightly glazed ceramic pots w/foilage that compliments the color

try a Persimmon color door and matching numbers

here are some other variations w/diff door color and address plaque

Gave you a chartreuse door (looks great w/dark blue.

darker wood door (but I think this blends too much w/the surrounding wood.

mcm 6-slat-glass door in a slate blue color. you could also do the trim in this color rather than white

any other color you'd like to see?

here's what the lime green looks like next to this Dark steel blue color.

I love what they did w/the wood on this house. the roof line is more peaked than yours, but you see how they did the vertical slats instead of horizontal?

I confess I have only skimmed the above comments so I might have missed details already provided.
What color is your roof? That might give some direction to color.

I’m not sure I would add wood — only from an upkeep point of view.

I’m assuming you want a lighter color given your climate. Once you factor in the roof color, what colors do you personally favor?
Personally I like a buttery/creamy yellow with a colorful door (blue being my choice)
And disagree with the comments about “mobile home flair”. Not at all. Your home looks common to the homes original roots of a more modest Florida. No need to shy away from color - it is everywhere in FL - and I see your neighbor to left appears to like color.

Past choosing the color, I think landscaping will be the biggest impact. Some palms and flowering shrubs among front of gravel with concrete pavers.
