I am in need of design ideas for a 2 story fireplace. Will be a contemporary style one. Is there a kind of paint that I can use over cement board around fireplace ? I just want a very simplistic fireplace but not sure about the correct material. This is a linear gas fireplace and provides a good amount of heat. We use the same fireplace in our current house and surrounding is tile. I can't even touch the tiles after 5-10 minutes after the fireplace lit on.

Is it possible to apply plaster smooth like a paint?

And what are your thoughts about tile up to ceiling? is it safe to tile that high ?
