Help with updating fireplace and living space

We are going to fill in the cubby and the sliding door. I am considering moving the tv to above the fireplace. Also want to replace the furniture in this space. Room is approximately 16 ft X 16 ft and is open to the kitchen. What are some ideas for the fireplace and the overall living space.

The fireplace is the one item in this room that doesn't need to be touched. It's the rest of the room. For a fresher appearance, I'd consider repainting the room a lighter neutral paint color. This one leans pretty golden. Too much a reference to Tuscan.

I never thought I'd ever tell someone they mounted their drapery too high but you did. The height for your window treatment in this room is governed by the windows adjacent to the kitchen. Once that height is set, all the other windows should follow for continuity. See how I have adjust your images below.

I closed up the arched niche, but if we saw a bit more of the room, it might have been better to enlarge the nice to accommodate the TV. Just don't know.

I would switch the locations of your sofa and loveseat.

I'd use the black cabinet to hold up the TV instead of the TV stand since your ceilings are so very tall. That way there is one less item in the room. I'd rearrange your furnishings into the layout you see below.

The fireplace is the focal point of the room, I would leave it the way it is with the large artwork, although the art is hung too high. I would drop it down to about 6-8” above the mantle. After you close the niche I would hang the tv on that wall. Center your seating towards the tv, but put the odd upholstered chair in the corner to the left of the fireplace. Curtain height should match and you don’t need the box valance and curtain together. Box valances are becoming dated. Your artwork and wall hangings are too random and in general hung too high. Hope this helps…

This does help a lot! I agree that I really don’t want the tv to be the focal point in the room. Yes, the box valences are very dated and ready to go. Please explain what you mean about curtain height should match? You mean match the top of the print?

Thank you, BeverlyFLADeziner. The height of the window treatments must have been the style years ago (2004) when the room was designed. Definitely time to update paint, etc!

We think the fireplace area actually looks very nice. We might suggest a lighter paint color and to hang the window treatments a little lower. Here is a design we did for a client which feels similar to your living room area.
