What is this guest room missing?

last year

My goal was to warm it up and add layers.

I would not only get larger lamps, but i would use them exclusively. That overhead lighting does not show true colors and is very harsh.

    Great. Black or white lamps?

Cognac throw or dark gray to match headboard?

  • last year

    You did a great job!!

What’s coming up for me is:

1- the nightstands feel too matchy matchy. I’d remove one of the vases and book and gold thingy.

2- try the bench at the foot of the bed.

3- definitely add a throw blanket. Any color is fine. I’d try cognac first.

4- id try a puffier Blanket insert. Unless you wanted a flatter look…

5- I’d put the back white pillows, laying down flat.

"What is this guest room missing?" It has good basics, so that's easy to add the missing charm and welcome.

First, replace the gray art with something colorful and cheerful.

Second, replace the brown and black pillows, again with something colorful and cheerful.

Third, add a colorful warm throw at the foot of the bed. If there's room, add a folding luggage rack.

Here are some colorful accessories on cream bedding.

Definitely leave enough room on the night stand for a cell-phone and charger, if not a charger for a computer. Perhaps you need sconces rather than a lamp on the night stand. Is there a luggage rack or place to put down a suitcase or backpack? Is the bench wide enough to sit on to put on one's shoes?

Are at least some of the dresser drawers empty for the guests to use?

Is something blackout on the window?

Are there thin blankets and also thick blankets if you live where the seasons change?

Someplace to hang up a bath towel so it dries within a day?

A strong enough doorknob so dogs can not open door at 2:00 A.M. and scare guest?

Space on the nightstand for both a phone charger and a book?

The night tables are small due to the wall space. Need room for at least a phone, eyeglasses, and a book, and maybe even a cup of water. (Be sure to have a stack of small paper cups in the bathroom your guests will be using!) Remove the vases (too easy to knock over in the dark when reaching for a phone or to turn on your current lamps) and put flowers in a single, bigger vase on the bureau instead. Your lamps look too small and so a bit out of proportion. Someone mentioned a sconce, but more specifically: Go with swing arm wall lamps and you solve both the table space and the lamp size/lamp shade size proportion problems. They will also give your guests decent lighting at a much better level to read by. Honestly, not crazy about the black/gold accent pillows with the all white bedding. Would like some softer colors that work better with gray, and then your current wall art over the bed would be fine. All white bedding does look a little “blah”, so some kind of throw at the end of the bed with the same softer colors as the accent pillows.

I hate that using an IPad, I can’t see your original posted pictures while I’m posting! After posting and going back to look, I can see that the bed headboard seems to be black fabric? Which is why you went with black and gold!? If you could somehow just wrap the headboard with a different fabric, your options are endless!

Or very dark gray and cognac, not black and gold. Here’s a swing arm lamp on Houzz

    A few ideas:

Maybe paint a dark wall color behind the bed for a moody, nighttime feel?

I like your glass lamps, maybe they just need larger shades? Bottom diameter of existing shades is good; maybe just drums that size instead of tapered?

Fold an extra blanket at the foot of the bed? (I would actually fold it across, just couldn't find a good picture like that to use!)

Hang a mirror over the bench? Thrift stores often have large mirrors for not many $$; scuffed frames can always be stained or painted.

Something natural? A green plant or dried grasses or tree branches in a vase? I've used a length of large cream-colored PVC pipe from ReStore as a "vase"; works for lightweight things as long as it doesn't need to hold water!

    Enhanced art?

If you stay with your cognac and dark gray, look for a pillow(s) that combine those.

For the bed to look welcoming, the bedclothes need a bit more fluff. Try filling with another ,say summer weight doona, to fill it up.

The lamps are quite lovely, but sit a bit low. Instead of going out for new, the style seems that it could be built up at the base with a stand - possibly an inch or two of a dark stained wood block, round and shaped to echo the base of the glass to bring them up a little higher and show off the glass. Leave the night stands with just the lamps and a simple clock or docking station , no need to add extras like vases.

@Simplynatural nailed it. We can all go home now!

Forget about fluffy duvet. Use the weight that is appropriate for your indoor night time climate. In a small guest room, you don't want to take up space with lots of extra blankets or with needing to toss off a heavy duvet on the floor in the middle of the night.

Simply natural. is that gray or brown accent wall color ?

  • last year

@Ty, I picked up the color of the carpet in the shadow of the bed from the photo and used that for the wall, so it's more of a brown. Has a bit of the cognac in it, but muted, less intense.

    And thanks, @Kendrah!
