Color (light or dark) on the ceiling is not new. IMO, no, not a trend.

A black ceiling can be a bit of investment, e.g. if it's not the same as the wall color. Also, would be handy to make sure the next color to go over it has good hide so you're not doing a gajillion coats over it.

Not a trend and just has to suit the space.
