A light color tile doesn't seem like the right direction for the FP.

The tile you're looking at seems to be too large for your fireplace.

Either select a tile that is so large you only require one piece for the face or select a smaller size that creates a pleasing grout line pattern.

You could just paint the existing tile.

I agree that something simple and dark would work nicely. I’ve not seen painted tile but my head goes to soapstone, single color slate or porcelain slate look. That marbled tile is a bit flashy and bright.

I agree - charcoal and simple (slate, soapstone or painting what you already have). It will make a more modern statement, but also neutral look.

I’d check into the Artillo line of tiles. You have a nice mix of modern, trad, and transitional, … I think you could find something that fits well with all, as well as compliments your plaster built-ins and becomes a nice focal point without being ’too much’. I’ve seen them in very contemporary and modern homes; they can fit with most styles.

I respectfully disagree with going charcoal there. I don’t think it fits the vibe or looks good with the black box (TV) next to it.
