headboard for florida apartment

Can i use a white velvet headboard for the master bedroom - white- in florida or is it inappropriate - too hot and looks silly in summer? I appreciate your opinions and also any recommendations for another fabric- not wood or metal
I have seen boucle in stores here and it seems like wool and winter to me. Maybe i am wrong as i do not have a designer’s eye.
Thank you for your help

I'm not to keen on boucle. I would pay more attention to the quality of the fabric. Make sure it is very tightly woven. Otherwise, it may look sloppy. Have a good conversaton with the store about fabric. As an example, I got an Ethan Allen couch for $2000. For me, it's an investment, and I keep my couches for at least ten years. The fabric is very tighly woven, in a light blue-gray with a very subtle simple modern pattern and a slight irridescent finish. After five years, it still looks sharp! White is fine if you are a super neat freak. Me being a total slob, white would not work!!!

I can't see velvet in a room with a tile floor. Velvet is a durable performance fabric, but not the right one for your space. Have you looked at plain weave fabric samples from Interior Define?

I imagine an upholstered headboard being hot, as well as challenging to clean, germy, and a bit of a mismatch for yourhard sleek bedside tables.

I would like to see the bed in white and your whole space . Is the bedding staying? The boucle to me is a fad that will be gone soone but there are fabrics that can handle heads resting on it much better than velvet which BTW i would consider a good wearing fabric. Do you read in bed then no velvet IMO, you would also need a better lamp.

The velvet might be appropriate but am questioning the white color.

These have a different look. You can easily find whichever style you like. I have one from Ballard which has a creamy white wood around the caning.

I am wearing a fleece jacket in FL this morning ... it does get "cold" here too!

How can furniture fabric be inappropriate for a certain climate? What matters is that the fabric should work with the overall design and be the right quality/durability for its intended use. I have a velvet headboard in my bedroom and a suede finish sofa in my media room. No one has walked in and said it was inappropriate for FL! Where do people get some of these odd "rules"! lol

Just be aware, that if you are a person that regularly leans against your headboard for reading or watching TV, there is a good chance you can stain the fabric with body/hair sweat and oils. I used an indoor/outdoor fabric for an upholstered headboard in my guest bedroom. Won't stain and easy to clean. My velvet one still looks perfect after many tears because we don't sit/lean against.

Chispa - thanks for the insight with humor. I am also “chilly” in Florida . You and Elaine Doremus have given good advice - fabric durability is key. Nothing looks good when stained…Jan Moyer - your direction to faux leather or Red Ryder option of those lovely cane selections has moved me away from white velvet. I truly appreciate your suggestions and gentle nudges.

The challenges continue. Patricia Colwell designs pointed to a key issue. I need lamps. The room has no ceiling light and no room for a floor lamp. Are there any bedside lamps that can serve double duty and also illuminate the room for getting dressed etc. Not only soft ambient light is needed. A dimmer would be necessary but what kind of shade? Am i searching for the impossible? Are the lamps in photos just too trendy and really not helpful nor the right harmony with the room? Thank you for shedding “light” on my dilemma.

You aren't showing the whole room!

Please stand back, get all four walls.

Add an inspo pic of a room you love!

Your own pic is one step up from the hospital : ) ? room. lol

I'm sure you want a space that welcomes you- that is no different in Florida than anywhere else. From lights to bedding to headboard or an entire bed , a rug, etc. It's all the sum of parts to create a whole. How do YOU want it to feel when you enter?

Pretty rooms - i see no metal lamps in the bedroom - is that a guideline i should follow? Thank you all you creative people for your opinions

Bedroom lamps can be a primary source of light. I personally don’t care for overhead fixtures in bedrooms, but the lamps need to be high enough to read and throw off enough brightness for you.

Why would a lamp NEED to be metal?

You haven't done your homework, You haven't posted four angles of the room. You have no inspo pics.

Put some effort in, or nobody can advise . No mind readers here...

Thank you - for directions as to what pictures should be posted. All four angles. I have white shades in the two other rooms so i was hoping for some variety if possible.

Four angles of the room. Only one “pharmacy” lamp in the interim. Your ideas for the lighting would be most appreciated

The lighting in one room has nothing to do with the lighting in another.

If you like all else about the space to now ? The lampshade can certainly be white.

The point here is do you like everything else?

You need two lamps for bedside, and something on the dresser. Move the pharmacy to the dresser.

Get a white faux leather headboard and done.

Please add some art......a rug..... it seems rather cold and a bit "hard" in there. Unless you love it, which is fine of course.

If you enter and say, "I 'd love to sleep in here"? Great : )

Love the material of the lamp -adds texture against the “ hard” surfaces.
Jan Moyer thank you - Never ever thought of placing the “pharmacy “ on the dresser! Do you think i should find additional items on dresser? What would you suggest? Do the 2 items i have there now need to be moved elsewhere?

You have to put some YOU into the room. It's not a surgery space, it is a bedroom! What do you like when you stay in a great hotel, when you travel? What makes you feel good when you enter?

Find some art you love for above the headboard. Put the pharmacy on the dresser!

Buy some fresh flowers or a lovely potted orchid.!

You aren't taking anything you buy, to your grave: )

Sterile - sterile- sterile. I lack imagination and therefore the courage to introduce ME. I would love glam bedding- yes - quiet luxe with a WOW. Maybe a pillow with beading? A comforter with a distinctive print . I have spent hours with inspiring photos I would like to share. I began with the blue color that might blend with walls and move away from gray. This might be fun- thank you all so much !!! The color is mineral from boll and branch- the sparkles are subtle the pattern should be unique

Is this lamp the same as the link you provided- less expensive- for sale on houzz

I lived in Florida for a long time and love white, but would not choose velvet. What about a cotton/rayon blend or possibly silk taffeta?

I did inquire and they have sent me swatches - the velvet and a polyester which is the more arctic white in photo. Agreed- Think it might be a good solution although not as fancy. Will have to work on bedding with some flair and with the help of my wise friends on houzz

    Swatches

For lighting, I would look for modern style, wall-mounted swing arm lights for above the bedside tables. A modern shade (not metal) like those in the above pictures. Great for reading, provide soft ambient lighting for the whole room, and leave the surface of the bedside tables free for a phone, book, etc.

The room is STERILE. Void of personality, yours or any other.

You went out, boat a boatload of matched white furniture. Dresser and end tables, plopped it on a tile hard floor. Right?

You don't even love the bedding, yes to that too? You do seem to like modern, but it need NOT be sterile.

Buy a BED. The whole thing. Not a headboard.

You like blue? Buy an upholstered in blue.

Room and Board bed, in navy summer linen. You do the rest, as YOU wish!

Thank you Jan Moyer - i love the glass lamps as well as the summer linen bed. You had suggested that i place the pharmacy on the dresser- where do i put it- center? Side near mirror which is near the patio door?
    Thanks for your help

Why would you put ANY lamp center and block the tv view? Wouldn't you want it to the left or the right side of that dresser?

I can't give you a tutorial on how to see a space. The Room and Board bed, the glass lamps, the art......suggest a FEEL in the space. while adding the elements you do not have. A headboard, lamps art.

You can't ask us what YOU like and we can't tell you what to like. Look at this and then look at your own room.

It doesn't have to be one particular color, pick your own art! Add a rug, lamps!

If you went to a hotel, and got a room, paid 400 a night.......do you want it to look the this room, or yours? : ) as it looks right now.

Maybe just hire a decorator? Or start with the room and board bed.

Or this one! Far less money, and in LINEN

I like the bed Jan posted. Will look great with your wood trim and soften the room a bit. I prefer the all white lamps with texture.

Yes, Kate, i definitely like the room posted Jan Moyer posted. Less expensive and would give me more flexibility with the fabulous bedding. Yes, i would love luxury- not too loud but with my personality imprint.
Any suggestions? There is a definite shortcoming - no designer eye but i am a very good student. Thank you all

Jan Moyer Thank you for lamp recommendation. I think it looks nice. I also moved the pharmacy lamp to dresser as you kind folks suggested. Did I place it correctly? Is it ok to keep the white items - they have nice texture but not sure if correct scale or too much white?
