Hmm- trying to visualize. So, if I understand, bridging the gap between the 2 different tiles, the thought is to add another row creating a ”transition strip” of a third tile with a different size that doesn’t match either of the two existing & new & an as yet unknown color? I’m not clear on how that addition would lessen the shock of the other 2 different colors. Could you provide more info such as, what are the rooms the new & old tiles will be in? How large is the span of the connection between the two?

ETA: an issue that I see on my monitor is that the existing tile color & proposed new tile color are different in intensity as well as color. The exisitng tile is ’warm’ the new tile color is ’cool’.

You understand correctly and for sure it is a problem. As to rooms, it is the basement. But I still want the end result to be as nice as I can make it. Lots of issues like 16x16 size tiles not being offered in the $2.00 per square foot range. Yes, I can pull up a few on the Lowe's and HD sites but they're either discontinued or out of stock. I also have to come close to the 8.62mm thickness of the existing. I bought the existing 16x16 Darlington beige at Lowe's long ago so no longer available.

How long will the join between the 2 rooms be? It’s a doorway? Just wondering if there’s another solution option. Could you post a picture of the two areas that will have the adjoining flooring? Often, a picture of the situation generates many more useful ideas one wouldn’t think of.

Agree that adding a photo of the space would help - what about going for something really different than the current tile (like a dark charcoal) and making the transition look more purposeful? Is the $2/sq ft a hard budget?

Could the old tiles be painted a color that transitions better with the new tile?

IMO those tiles should not be seen together at all and for sure no additional tile to the mix. You need to show us the spaces you are working with for sure.

@zumtobel Great decision to try finding another solution. I really think you’ll get some creative solutions to consider with a picture of the area where the two flooring areas will meet & a bit more info. I agree that it should look nice even if this area is in your home’s basement. If you’d provide the picture, you might be able to go into your meeting with Lowe’s with some great ideas to explore & discuss with them. You know all the Houzzers love nothing better than a home improvement decor challenge! Good luck!

For the best outcome I would find local independent tile stores and not shop at Lowes, which is a hardware store and not a tile store. Local tile shops will carry a wide range of tiles in all budgets. There is always one really high end tile shop in an area, but the rest of the shops will have mid range and budget selections. Visit a few and see what they have. The sales people should also be more knowledgeable when it comes to tiles and combining them.

I bet Lowe’s and HD command most of the market for tiles so they are hardly just hardware stores. In my case, I’m looking for tiles at the $2.00 a square foot level. Independents for the most part can’t compete at that price so are also installers with design services.

I disagree with your statement. Tile is a small subset of Lowe's and HD's inventory. Even Floor and Decor would be a better source and give you a lot more options.

Solved my problem! Where the existing tiles end, there used to be a wall. I am putting the wall back up. So other than the doorway, gone is the problem of different tiles meeting up directly. For the doorway, I'll install a metal threshold. Thanks for everyone's input!
