Does the FP actually function ?

What had you planned before you demolished?

A prebuilt surround could be installed over the perimeter of your fireplace leaving the inner brick showing that would add depth. We used cast stone but wood surrounds are less expensive.

We need answers .

I would hire a stone mason first and then I would have this person adhere to the perimeter - however they do it - some sort of stone to form an "extension wall" which could come out about two to three inches around, and the correct depth will depend on the stones or tiles chosen for within the new perimeter. This would be the first step. Choose new stone, or tiles together with the mason's opinions in mind, that could be adhered to the brick creating a brand new face that is updated and solves the flush issue. If you simply must have the brick, you could apply new brick.. Technically, if the mason says this is a doable job, you could use any type of stone or tile and continue this same stone onto the pedestal of the FP. It would look so great.. Finally I would also consider in the plan: applying a mantel to the top and depending on your decor and the stone, a thick piece of raw edged wood is very popular these days. Using wood matches many styles of decor from modern, to transitional to minimalist. If you don't care for wood, I am certain that the mason could fashion a mantel using the same stones/tiles you choose for the other facets of the job.

I suggest adding a wood trim to cover the joint between the brick and the wall. Add a floating mantel, Custom Fireplace Door and some artwork.
