Keep this rose or throw away?

I purchased this rose from Walmart last year. I believe the rose is a pink peace rose. I’m new to roses and unsure if the rose is diseased beyond repair. I bought it for $5 so I won’t be super sad if I have to throw it in the green waste bin.

Actually, you have plenty to lose--time and effort, plus this poor rose takes up valuable space in your garden. Toss it and get a better quality plant, preferably at a local nursery, or at least where there are better plants offered. This may seem harsh, but I'd never buy a $5 rose at Walmart. Some of the Walmarts around here don't bother to water their plants and they look atrocious, dying by inches. Diane

I would cut it up to the level shown below, add some grow stimulator and cover it with plastic gallon. Most likely some new buds would develop.

I would have thrown it out. But if they all say it can be saved...I guess you have nothing to lose. :) :)

Doesn't look diseased to me, just gnarly. Give it TLC, everything the best you can, then if it limps along, give it the boot, but wait at least until fall.

Diane, I am going to take your advice! This rose is indeed taking up valuable space. Now to figure out what to put in its place…decisions, decisions!

Some time ago, I heard a knowledgeable employee of a local nursery say: “Roses - America’s favorite annual.”

It was less a statement about roses than a commentary on his nursery’s typical customer.

I love everyone’s input above! I have a savior complex so i would try the method Elena mentioned above… but if its taking up space and you don’t have the patience to see if she’ll perform, I’d say $5 isn’t that big of a loss. Agree with Diane about Walmart roses lol

Its hard to me to give up on roses. Out of 80 + roses roses, I had only one required a special attention after Winter. Using “my method“, this is how my rose looks today.

Diane's advice is excellent. The only thing worse than throwing away $5 on a rose that's not performing well is throwing away a year of your life, trying to coax an unwilling/unhealthy plant into doing what it clearly has no intention of doing. Spend more, get a better plant and replace the sad one.
