If the door faces the sun it will get hot no matter the color you paint it.

The steel doors dent over time.

It only takes someone hitting your door with a rolled up newspaper or package and it can leave a dent.

Wood or fiberglass doors are more expensive for a reason. They last longer.

Previously sold steel doors for years before fiberglass were made and I can count on one hand the amount of times anyone ever told me of their steel door getting dented or even seen one at a home unless there was a particular reason. They do not dent during normal use.

The owner of the company that I saw the Provia steel door at said he sells more steel entry doors than fiberglass simply because of the price. Plus he said Provia is 20 gauge steel as opposed to 24 gauge steel. Does that mean they would be less likely to dent?

I have only ever had steel doors and have never had one dent. As for getting hot all doors get hot in the direct sun a simple canopy over the door will help hugely. I live in Canada we buy steel entry doors becuase they are usually really well insulated and I really dislike storm doors

Yes, 20 gauge is a thicker steel skin than 24.

One other question. If a smooth steel door is repainted, does it take paint as easily as fiberglass?

I have a steel door on my dog run entry door, and its been there at least 14 yrs now, with out any dents, and my dog is rammy, if any door would be dented, it would be that one, and it isnt. It is also painted, and 2 yrs ago, I repainted it again, not because, it needed paint, but, because, I changed the outside color on all my exterior doors. Use a good bonding primer and paint it any color you want.. Mine gets hot afternoon sun, and is painted a brighter color turquoise, and has not had any fading problems.
