Unknown seedlings with waxy purple lobed foliage

last modified: 2 years ago

These seedlings have been sprouting in several of my garden beds (upstate NY) over the last week or two. The waxy/fleshy reddish-purple leaves appear to be lobed and are attached to large black seeds that are the size and color of dry black beans.

Neither the sprouts nor the seeds bring to mind anything I planted intentionally. Does anyone recognize them?

Is peony a possibility? The seeds seem to match and I do have two young plants nearby, but they haven’t bloomed ”heavily” yet and I never thought of them as proficient self seeders.
