Dark paint or white paint?

last year
last modified: last year

Does dark paint really impact interior home temperature ? we have moderate climate 6 months of sun and 6 months of cold temperature below 60F.

Does dark exterior color fade quickly and show water stains?

Thinking of white body color with white stone

or Black body color with white stone

Builder only does one coat of paint for dark color and if light color its a 3000$ upgrade to do double coat.

I like the black but I sure would like to see some glass in those garage doors

I like dark or black. And I would like to see wood on those garage doors. Maybe even a wood front door. And Patricia Colwell is right about the windows..

Please do not add another trim to the mix one star per house and in your case the stone

    What about a sage green?

I would get a double coat of paint no matter what color you choose.

If the masonry does not go all the way around the house, get rid of it and use the cost savings to pay for the second coat of medium colored paint.

This weekend I was out and about, and saw this house; note the aesthetic difference between the front of the house and the side of the house:

No masonry on the side. No windows on the side. It is a tract home (condo), but stand on tip-toe and strive for something better. Think of your home as an extension of who you are.

I do think a medium to dark color looks better, but I don't see how one coat of any color is sufficient unless they apply one coat very carefully, and not thinly. I am skeptical that any contractor is going to do a great job with one coat. The purpose of a second coat is to even out the coverage and cover holidays. Are they going to do one coat and then carefully examine the entire surface for holidays, or are you going to be discovering them weeks after they leave?

There is a lot of room between black and white. I find black to be very severe. It seems kind of trendy to me as well. Do you think you would still like it in a couple years? I would consider more moderate dark colors.

If the house is well insulated, there shouldn't be any difference in the interior temperature between having a dark vs. a light exterior.

It's really a personal preference between the two photos. I would prefer the light color.

To my mind one is too light and the other too dark.

I was trying to get something more like this below.

Dark. You can keep the stone on the columns and garage surround if the low foundation cladding is too much of a cost to go all around the house.

Do what you want, and don't worry about the neighbors' houses.

The darker paint really makes the stone accents stand out - for me, I would want those to blend more so I prefer the lighter paint colors (but totally personal preference) so maybe think about how prominent you want the stone to be in your overall look?

I’m with Beverly on a medium tone— one of the medium tones in the stone. A bit lighter than the roof. I don’t think a really dark color with tall strips of light stone looks good, but the first photo light color may be a little washed out. Can’t see a brighter white looking good.
Then with a lot of landscaping the house would seem more settled.
