Textured Ceiling Issue :(

Hi all. We are renovating our basement (one month in and was looking forward to the end) and our contractor was meant to match our ceiling texture to the rest of our house... I just walked downstairs and my heart sank. I mean I'll live, but it's a completely different style than what we have upstairs. I believe this is a knockout ceiling, and upstairs we have "orange peel"?

The contractor is very nice and he's super proud of his work and says it'll look great when dry... My hubby did the hiring and discussions... neither of us are very handy or understand the terminology.

Is there any way to fix this without starting over? It's so jarring...and it's an open space so the whole area spans like this.....

help :(

thanks, but it doesn't really answer my questions, or consider that it isn't my preferred option...

I was offering a different perspective. I believe orange peel is sprayed on so I assume it's possible to do, but again I'd leave it.

    Nope.

    That would be knockdown.

I would ask nicely for him to fix it. Hopefully he acknowledges that this wasn’t what you asked for. Whether he has to start over is his problem, not yours. I would definitely not call that an upgrade.

It's looking like we will need to take this down and start over. The contractor was paid and might get back to us with a quote... I'm not holding my breath. I had an issue with a contractor a few year's back that ended up with a police call and a restraining order - this is NOT remotely the same situation, but I'd rather just pay and get them out than draw out the issue. They were made well aware of it, though. They told us the supplies/materials for an orange peel ceiling are no longer manufactured, so they couldn't do one even if they wanted to ....... yeah. Is that true? I was reading up on it and it seems like it's just a different nozzle size and application technique?

I would appreciate any tips or pointers about the easiest way to remove this ceiling now, in case we have to do this ourselves, I believe wetting it a lot will help? Then we scrape and sand?

It's all dried now and looks so busy and dated. I remember these types of ceilings from 90s showhomes...ugh... It's the first thing the eye is drawn to in the otherwise calm and neutral space.

Orange peel is still standard in many parts of the country. If this knockdown has been painted you probably need to live with it.
