Kitchen/WIP layout advice needed:)

last year
last modified: last year

Could use another set of eyes looking at our kitchen addition

family of 7 and a dog. making a sizable addition on the back of our home to accommodate our family and also future holiday gatherings. attaching the current layout of the home and then the concept plans for the addition. I could use opinions on the layoit and workflow and thoughts on the pantry set up (will also have a little workststion/filing station for the many paper needs in our family within the pantry). Top photo needs to be turned on its side to match up with concept plan.

edited to add: see comment below for existinf home plan rotated. Also: center room with additional dining space is an outdoor covered patio we are creating between the two separate room additions so not extra dining seating for day to day.

First we do not have one measuremetn of any spac e. IMO a pantry outside the work space of a kitchen is just plain useless . How many eating spaces do you really need. How many people are in the kitchen cooking usually ? Post the original turned so I do not have to stand on my head to compare the new and old. A sink directly across from a range never good . Why doors everywhere from one space to the next ? So much missing info there is no way to help.Post both drawings in jpeg format in comments DO NOT start another post . Filling station/ paper needs that needs to explained too.

if you zoom in you can see measurements on both images the nunbers are just small on the concept drawings. the doors all lead to a covered couryard/patio. Pantry connects to workspace but not sure about the door arrangement. I too am concerned about the sink in the island but can't figure out a more workable location. 1-2 people cooking but kids always ubderfoot.

Sorry but I still cannot read the measurements Thanks for turning the drawing. Maybe just post the kitchen floor plan to scale since thta seems to be where your issues are . Do that on graph paper make sure all the measurements are clearly marked and larger then post that here in jpeg in a comment just like you did before .iNclude the pantry in the drawing too.

The new layout is out of focus. Try reading it yourself. Almost impossible. This plan 5 seats on an island, plus 8 seats at the existing dining table for 13, plus 8 seats in a large dining room closed off with double doors. That's 21. Plus a dinette with likely 4 more for a total of 25. Too many. Seating isn't a good priority when the kitchen suffers.

I also see a downdraft ventilation of some kind on the range when you're on an outside wall. You need a hood. You've created a wall to add a door to the pantry. I'd continue the addition exterior wall of the kitchen forward up to the garage. It will simplify the space configuration.

For some reason I can read all the dimensions fine by zooming in just a little. I don't see a problem with the sink across from the range; the symmetry is nice and since your aisle is 5'4" that's way more than adequate for more than one person (some will say it's too wide and it may be.) If you could remove the wall between the aisle and the pantry (turn the pantry door 90 degrees and move it to the wall where the pantry counter starts) then the aisle could be a bit narrower without the bottleneck that short wall sticking out causes.) Agree that you need a vent hood. What is blurry is the note on what the three square things are on the wall shared with the mud room...fridge is first at the end of the island, yes? What are the two other things?

The first things I noticed were all the doors and how much floor space is taken up with the door swings. Would you consider sliders with windows, like French sliders? If you don’t like those, in the middle area you could use one set of French doors flanked by large windows. That would save a bit of money and I think you’d only use one door at a time anyway.

Sliders would be ideal as doors for all aroubd the covered patio!

With a family of 7, I would want more useable workspace than I see right now. All three primary work zones (Prep, Cooking, Cleanup) are crammed into one small area of the Kitchen.

It would be helpful if you posted a fully-measured layout that we can use. Both versions have measurements that are not very useful for our needs.

Excerpt from the Featured Answer of the "New to Kitchens? Read Me First!" thread. (See the Note below about measurements that are not very helpful.)

Please post a fully-measured layout of the space under consideration and a sketch of the entire floor [sketch is already provided]. Both can be either hand-drawn, computer generated, or drawn up with computer/app tools.

By "fully-measured", we mean a layout with the widths of each wall/window/door/doorway and the distances between each wall/window/door/doorway labeled. See a sample below. If something cannot be moved or changed, label it precisely on your layout (see post in sample) and tell us why it cannot be moved/changed -- we may have some ideas for you.

The sketch [already provided] of the entire floor lets us see how the Kitchen relates to the rest of the home. It doesn't have to be to-scale, but it should accurately show how the rooms relate to each other and should include all interior & exterior doors. In addition, it will help us see how traffic flows in, around, and through the Kitchen. Label the front entry and family entry. The family entry is usually a garage or side entry, but it might not be. It's helpful to know which door you use to bring in groceries.

Regardless of how you draw it up (by hand, computer, etc.), please be sure all measurements are labeled. (Note: Computer generated layouts often lack key measurements and, sometimes, measure to/from things like the middle of a wall or the middle of a window. Neither are useful. Measure each item and the distances between each item.)

    Other questions...

    • Tell us about you and your family and how you plan to use your Kitchen. All-adults? Empty Nesters? Children (now or in the future)?
    • What appliances (& their sizes) do you plan to have?
    • Where are you flexible? Can walls/windows/doors/doorways change (move, change size, add, delete)?
    • Do you have a basement under the Kitchen or are you on a slab?

Off-topic, but how do you envision using that top-left fireplace with the powder room and closet in front of it?

Thats another problem. that room is going ro be a craft/play room 80% of the time and then holiday/entertaining dining space with transformer tables added as needed. twenty+ years down the road it will turn into our first floor master. we need a second powder room on the main floor and would love to have it plumbing ready cir when we someday make it a master bath but i cant find a way to make it not in the way now and not stealing light from the family room but also giving some privacy at the exit point i know it could be done narrower but not sure if its in the best part to the room. (also want a bathroom closer to the outdoor area so people don't have to walk too far.

Heres an attempt at making the dimensions easier to see. not sure why some can zoom in and others cant🤷🏻‍♀️ the walls in red are existing and we would prefer not to knock down existing exterior walls. we have 5 children 6-16. We have a very large extended family so when we host parties there are ususally 30 plus people.

i am usually the only cook but i have helpers every now and again. i envision the island as a breakfast homework area and the table for family dinners. Im hoping to use the WIP both as food storage and a small area for my paperwork/filing. the architect recommended adding a second dishwasher and sink because we ususally have more dishes than 1 can handle and im envisioning that one to be used for lunch box containers, water bottles and smoothie supplies which will also hopefully be stored in WIP. A 42” fridge was recommended but i think im going to stick to 36” standard depth workhorse because theres a lot more storage and much cheaper. was considering a high end french stove but not sure i want to commit to the odd dimensions so most likely sticking with a 36” range and a separate wall oven on the far wall for entertaining times. we will have either floor to ceiling cabinets between fridge and wall oven or my preference of a counter top with uppers ior an appliance garage for baking supplies. seeing as there are no uppers by range (i need lots of light) im looking into dishware drawers for the left of the range near the dishwasher. my concerns are the pantry entry and layout (would like to keep the existing windows) and the workflow. i think moving fridge next to pantry entry will keep it closer to island but not sure if the french doors will be a problem there thank you all so much for the feedback and guidance on how to share the details. please correct me if its still not being shared properly. @buehl

The problem with your measurements is that you're not providing the ones we've asked for. Look at the sample. We need the widths of each wall/window/door/doorway and the distances between each wall/window/door/doorway labeled. We don't need measurements from random points in a wall or to/from cabinets or cabinet sizes or ignoring the windows/doors/doorways. These measurements are especially important since you want to keep existing windows, walls, etc. If we don't know where they're placed exactly we cannot recommend other then guessing or giving general advice.

  • last year

Maybe this will help. BTW...see how blurry the #s are? This is what most are talking about. You can sort of read them, but some are guesses. Regardless, the measurements we need are the ones in blue & red.

  • last year

Thanks for the new floorplan. I can read that, easily.

  • last year

Yes, but that latest the OP posted doesn't have very useful measurements. Sure, you can make guesses, but guesses are no where near accurate enough.

Since the OP isn't responding to the request for better measurements, most people are probably moving on.

I'll give the OP another day or so b/f moving on since I know we're asking for a lot of measurements and it takes time to measure. (The reason there are so many is b/c there are so many windows & doors/doorways.)
