Using Superthrive foliage-Pro on hosta

I grow hosta in pots only. I bought Superthrive Foliage-Pro at the suggestion of Al. The hosta I bought last year (lost several) all were in need of mineral supplementation (iron chlorosis). The problem was that I used Miracle-gro right out of the bag and it didn't drain. (I would swear that it used to work just fine.) I re-potted all of those hosta in a mix of Miracle-gro, expanded shale, perlite and pine bark mulch. I applied the recommended application for mineral deficiencies (1 tsp. per gallon).

Now, the two questions:

1. Do I use this product as my usual fertilizer? Obviously, I don't want to continue to water my plants one gallon at a time all summer. The label says to use in a siphon mixer, which seems to apply to sprinkler systems. The other option is to mix it in a sprayer, which seems to be another option for carrying around and continuing to refill a gallon container.

2. If this is a good option for regular fertilizing? If so, how can it be applied easily?

I have used Superthrive with Miracle gro but not as much as I use MG. I like to use it more in the hot weather. It gives them a pick me up. There is no PNP rating on the bottle I have. That kind of scares me. So. for me not as my #1 fertilizer. I honestly thought the old guy was drinking it himself he was super charged at 93.

I thought the one that Al recommended was Dyna-Gro Foliage Pro. That is the one I have.

Dyna Gro was bought out by Superthrive. I have major reservations about Superthrive as the original Superthrive formulation was just a bunch of hocus pocus ingredients and some natural plant hormones. But it is what it is.....just make sure the jug says Foliage Pro or Grow on it to make sure you are getting a real fertilizer.

FWIW, I use the Foliage Pro 9-3-6 formulation on all my containers, indoor and out. And since my entire outdoor garden is grown in containers, that means everything, including hostas, receive it weekly or biweekly all through the growing season. I apply it with a watering can and it is a bit time consuming with that many containers to fertilize and water but it is manageable.

Interesting that Dyna Gro was bought out by Superthrive.

As a container grower gardengal, how much of the fertilizer do you use when you water? I've never really understood how much I was supposed to use. Always wanted to ask that question.

I use the maintenance level - 1/2 tsp per gallon of water. Weekly, weakly :-))
