Congratulations on your new home.. The red is confusing you and the good thing is you know this. Once that red disappears the beauty in your space will emerge. The floors and even the counter will look like they were married to begin with.

Why not bring that soft blue color on the other walls into the kitchen?

I am more confused by the ceiling fan than the wall color, TBH. :)

I would get a new, more streamlined ceiling fan, preferably one that works with a remote control - or alternatively, a nice light fixture.

As far as the wall color - I think a taupe. Or a white.

NO ceiling fan ever in a kitchen IMO. Get a nice LED track light for that spot with 5 heads all LED 4000K bulbs and as for wall color how about a nice white that matches the cabinets for now. Take a cabinet door to the paint store and have it color matched , paint all the walls hang some fun art on the wall to the right in the photo. Then relax and enjoy the new place . A kitchen reno might be in the future but not for at least 6 months .

Honestly, the red has kind of a retro look paired with the cabinets and exposed cabinet hinges. Would you consider keeping the red or is that out of the question? I do agree with other posters about the ceiling fan. It really needs to be replaced with another style. I will advise that you add some glass to at least a couple of your cabinets - perhaps those on either side of the sink. It's honestly not that hard to do yourself. Good luck!

If it were me, I would paint the walls the same as the cabinets, replace the ceiling fan with a simple schoolhouse light (high wattage on a dimmer, Rejuvenation will up the wattage on their fixtures), add a rug you love and enjoy :) congrats on your new kitchen ✨

I will be the lone dissenter on ceiling fans in kitchens. Not sure why everyone thinks they're taboo. I have them in two kitchens, and they serve their purpose--moving the air around in a room that can get very stuffy.

I would prime them and paint them to match the rest of the house for now- looks like a soft grey.

I think the soft grey has a purple undertone which is why the OP referred to it as lilac in the thread title.

It's not a bad version of lilac but I can understand why one wouldn't like it.

The ceiling fan is too big for the space but may be necessary depending on where the OP lives. If a new ceiling fan isn't in the budget, they can check if the blades are white on the other side and turn them around. Or they can paint the blades white. That would tone down the fan.

If the OP is painting over the coral/red with a light color they will need fewer coats if they start with a primer. I'd prime the red and then reevaluate color choices.

I am loving the red that is there. Its a happy kitchen. I see so many boring kitchens on this forum, that just looking at the picture with the red, is very refreshing. I dont like that ceiling fan, but, I do think fans in a kitchen are nice to have, especially, if you live in a hot climate. I do live where it gets very hot, but, I dont have a ceiling fan. I do however run a small fan, on hot days, if I am working in the kitchen, so a fan is very practical.

Sorry but lights in a fan are never great and that is the only light in that space except for over the sink . I bet there is a reno in the future so track light is a good stand in to get more light until that reno takes place . I see no issue with lighting thta mimics bright daylight in a kitchen where you want excellent lighting with no yellow cast

I don’t think this was mentioned but i would take down the ”bathroom” light over the sink and replace it with something more appropriate.

Paint the whole room the same color as the cabinets. It will be very easy to live with and you won't have to worry about what the wall color in the kitchen looks like next to the purple undertoned walls in the rest of the house. Get a new light fixture for above the sink. If you want to keep the fan, paint it white too. Congrats!

Back in 2004 I painted my kitchen walls red! It had stained cabinets and a similar granite counter to OP's. That was in the era of Killim Beige and Baby Turtle ,when we weren't afraid of color!

For the OP, that red and "lialac" do not go well with the floors. I would look for an off-white that works with the counter, cabinets and floors.

White walls to match your cabinets. If you love the ceiling fan, replace the blades with white ones. Add a black/white runner in front of the sink.

The good news is - anything you do will be an improvement! Ditch the red.

Re: ceiling fans — I’m in a very, very hot state and have ceiling fans throughout my house, but would never have one in a small kitchen with low-ish ceiling….

The blades get dusty, no matter how clean the room is. It’s inevitable and I wouldn’t want dust being blown around where I cook.

I don’t like air blowing on food I’m making or eating (I think I see a table there).

Freedom’s mock-up with it gone shows what a huge difference it makes not being there. It really opens up the kitchen.

@cat_ky I very much agree. The colors in this kitchen are vibrant and really do give it a lot of life and uniqueness. Of course OP can paint it white, etc. That goes without saying. But it’s true that it will then look like just about every other kitchen we see. That is ok, though, because it is personal preference and the colors there now are obviously not for everyone.

Red is a good color to have in dining areas - that is why it’s often used in restaurants and eateries. It’s also the #1 Power Color in Feng Shui.

WOW! You ALL are beyond awesome! Thank you so very much for all the comments and suggestions! I don't love the red at all - especially with the orangyness of the floors which seems to clash with the counters. Yes the red is no doubt confusing me! I hope to do a renovation within a couple years but for now your suggestions to paint the walls white, light grey or taupe seem like the easiest and practical solution that will immediately help the kitchen look better. Also, yes 100% agree to get rid of the bathroom light fixture over the kitchen sink. I will eventually replace the ceiling fanwith something more streamlined as suggested or I'll get rid of it all together. I don't love the style of the fan at all but I do like the suggestion of painting the fan blades white until I find something to replace it.
