Kitchen Island Design Help

last modified: 2 years ago

Hello.

We have a large island (~134x~56") in our kitchen design. We're trying to improve the end of the island close to the great room. Since it's front and center of the family room, we want the style to be spot on and look more like great room furniture vs the current look (presented by the cabinet designer). Would love some other's ideas on how to improve the design here for aesthetics. Thank you!

One easy option is to match the island in wood to the perimeter. Match the end to the perimeter end with 2 panels.

What does the great room furniture that you would like the island end to resemble look liike?

We are having a waterfall end to our kitchen island that faces the living areas. Would that work in your design?

Waterfall countertops are usually used in more modern designs. If your cabinets are going to be Shaker style, paneled ends would be appropriate.

Your wood end piece on the sink run looks nice and you could echo the same for the end of your island. If you like shelves, I'd put glass doors on the that echo the glass doors in your hearth room.

Very spacious kitchen. There are some great designers on here. I'd question them about the distance from your 8 burner stove to your sink.

Prep kitchen? You have a nice size kitchen with large windows and what appears to be a nice view and somebody is going to be thrown back into that little windowless prep kitchen to prep?

The architecture drawings are not as up to date as the 3d rendering.
The “prep kitchen” is really just a pantry with an extra sink and dishwasher. And places for countertop appliances.
I think that’s a good point about the distance between the range and sink. I think it appears to be closer in the 3 d rendering compared to the blueprints

All base cabinets are drawers except for those that are only 15” deep where we elected for doors since the drawers are not deep enough

I think part of what you are reacting to is that the island ought to end before the ceiling beam, not even with it. It's intruding on your great room.

Yikes! Please tell me the blue prints are a mistake and you are not really planning on having seating in the same isle as the huge range? That is a terrible and dangerous idea!

You said this is the design presented by your kitchen designer. But, are they an actual certified kitchen designer?

Is this a new build or a remodel?

Would you open to different ideas on the layout? Please say yes! 😬

If you are, here is the thread that explains what information is needed to get feedback.

I didn’t notice the kitchen end of the island in the 3rd rendering because the rendering was so crazy bright I just skipped past it. I can barely see what is happening, but at least I see now that there is not seating in the cooking zone. I still see several other issues, so hopefully we can help.

I will say it looks like it could be an awesome open space. I love the great room with the high ceilings and the stone fireplace between all the glass!

I agree with think about function first then how to impress whoever. The end cabinet can be a bookcase / wine cooler / beverage refrigerator

I am not understanding the beams

ETA: I usually never ask my gc husband about my houzz kitchen design stuff, 😬. But, in that one rendering, the beams confused me. I understood they were supporting the upstairs, so once he explained, I got it! Sorry! 🤪

I love your giant hood in your kitchen, that range would be fun to cook on or even better have a caterer come in to create something delicious.

End panel for the island? try simplicity.

But.... the seating behind the range is not ideal How about moving the seating to end.

When you do meet with your KD think about the prep kitchen. Why do you need it? The reason I ask is that in the past people had butlers pantries and prep kitchens for the caterer. People were hidden away working. But now, families friends and guests like to be part of the action in the kitchen. Could you integrate that prep kitchen to help you make cooking zones to include everyone?

think about adding something like this to your space.

You could also create a double island so that one island is cooking and one is eating .. Maybe like this.

Start with reducing the island size to actually be IN the kitchen. It’s too long, and there is no stone that will fit it without a seam. Then get a prep sink on it.

Eliminate the punishment closet. Just make the giganticus oversized overbudget kitchen do the work it is supposed to be able to do, better.

Yikes! The seating is on the wrong end of the island. The whole plan is pretty awful.

Start over. Hire a much better architect. And an actual kitchen designer. You 6M can go a lot further, with better function.

Not a fan of bulk for bulk's sake. The beams are really bulky, the island is bulky, the range is bulky, the hood is massively bulky. Yet the whole isn't a connected and designed piece. It's a bunch of large things thrown into a box and shook around until they find a spot.

If that section snip is representative of the whole, then your drafter is no architect, and is doing you a disservice.
