TV seating for 4-5 in this tiny walk-thru living room? Help!

last year

This room is about to be emptied for painting, and junking the horrible giant sectional. The dog doesn't know yet, don't tell her. We end up using this for some casual TV viewiing and snacking since it is right next to the kitchen, even though it is smaller than the living room.

Do I just buy a smaller sectional to fit 4-5 adults? A couch and two chairs?

Would love something sleeker and less oversized horror, but don't want to compromise comfort for elegance. This sectional is 90 inches by 94 inches, for scale.

What matters:

Attractive and COMFORTABLE, a love seat in this room was a huge fail.

Also being able to put feet up, so something an ottoman or hearty coffee table would work with.

Thank you!

There could be some nice options

Can you draw and measure the room ?

French doors to book built in,step to fire and all windows in their placement? Feet and inches all: ) Upload it as a neat, bold jpeg, below in a comment?

You have a nice space, but since it is tight, drawings would be a big help. For instance, would the tv work in the bookcase? It's hard to tell from the photos.

I would add lamps and decluttering to your to-do list. Don't put everything back after painting. The clutter and lack of lighting contribute to making the space look dreary,

I love your beams and built ins.

Our family of 5 spends our movie watching time in a small sunroom. We have a couple of small swivel tulip chairs that are great because you can focus on TV or talk to someone in the kitchen or on the patio. Getting 3 on sofa is tight but doable, but we also have a small rocker and a cushioned storage ottoman that serves as a coffee table.

Having 2 chairs and small sofa with a ottoman would allow you to rearrange seating. but you would need good measurements. If the TV fit on the built ins you could flank the stove with the chairs. Small scale recliners could be a comfy option for chairs. Probably it would be cheaper to just get a new sectional but a sofa and chairs would give more options. good luck with the re do.

I like kathleen’s ideas except the sectional, which would limit traffic and conversational flow

Ok, I hope this is readable, if not I can redo with a black marker when I get one tomorrow!

Thank you for your kind support!

And would love to hear any thoughts on lighting! It is so dark! One random ceiling light and a floor lamp, but never bright enough at night.

It would be pretty easy to add room-level lighting. Up the wattage and warmth in the ones you have. And then add a couple more lamps. You have lots of places where you can add them. The top of the bookcase cabinet, one of the tables, interior end of the kitchen counter, another floor lamp or two. You don't need all of them but you do need a couple more with good bulbs in them.

I probably wouldn't use that ceiling spotlight or I'd change the bulb. It looks like it's trying to light up a parking lot.

Also bumping this up to get the attention of the floor plan gurus.

I think the TV is in the right place. But on the wrong piece of furniture. Search or shop for corner TV cabinets. I like thatbyou can see it from the kitchen and that it allows the fireplace to be the focal point.

Thank you! Agree--the ceiling spotlight is the worst! It is actually there from the previous owner to spotlight artwork (different bulb).

    Thank you for bumping it.

I would absolutely put the TV on the bookcase, couch with back to the door (looks like 1 door, not french?). That would leave you about 12' from back of couch to bookcase wall. Then get 1-2 chairs (swivel) for the side near the kitchen. You can test out that layout by rotating your sectional. You COULD get another sectional but the chairs provide more room to move. You could get small benches that you could use either for seating or for ottomans. We have these and love them. They flank our fireplace when not in use:

This thread has a photo by @chispa that shows a frame TV in a bookcase. Just an example of how you could set it up. https://www.houzz.com/discussions/6434289/samsung-frame-tv-over-a-fireplace#n=13

    Wasn't aware you came back!

Okay, a less than perfect room. A bit dark

In a heart beat? I'd paint out the brick- would be a nice brightener and it's not a sin.

If brave? Take out three shelves in the big section of bookcase ! Put the flat screen there!

Me , I'd do four super comfy swivels chairs, around a 42 inch diameter cocktail and be done.

Add a pair of standing lamps.

Ps. a 15'6' x 19' room isn't tiny. It is MADE so by passages, doors, window, openings and traffic through.

Needless to say, you can upgrade what you have, in which case, I would most definitely fur out and drywall right over the brick and put a nice flat screen on that drywall. : ) left of the firebox. Put an arm for swivel out. A nice option if it remains there. With the four swivels? Using the chunk of book case wall is also an option

Another thought--don't decide on paint color until you have the upholstered pieces selected. Are you using the same rug? Both large pieces will drive your paint color, and it's easier to select a paint color from the thousands available to blend with the upholstery and rugs than the other way around.
