Yes - the picture is just for reference. I’d like opinions about whether plantation shutters would work here.

I have plantation shutters all over my house. They look good but block light. I have taken them out of one room and would take them out of more rooms if new blinds weren't so expensive.

Those are not plantation shutters. They appear more as an inexpensive version of Hunter Douglas 'Nantucket" shades, or Silhouettes- a vein for light control within sheer fabric. You can put them anywhere you like, as long as they are appropriate to your home, your style . They flatten and roll up to disappear entirely.......

The picture below shows plantation shutters on the window on the left. They're used more in the south and with more traditional decor. If the picture you posted is not your house I have no idea if they fit with your style. Look online at all the options, or if you can visit a store devoted to blinds, do that. There are so many choices. Decide if you're looking for light control, privacy or both.

Some people like Plantation shutters and some don't. I'm one of those that doesn't like them for my own home. They feel too claustrophobic for me and block too much of the windows, even when the slats are fully open.

I like shutters but they do block light especially if they have wider stiles and rails.

I hate plantation shutters they block views thay look heavy and are a PITA to clean . What do you want from them in your space ? I like solar shades if controlling heat and UV is the reason. They allow you to keep the view and give daytime privacy. I usually mix them with either drapes or roman shades if night time privacy is a big deal. The shutters are also very expensive for IMO no real purpose.I aslo agree what you are showing are not plantation shutters but just blinds

Of all the issues someone might have with plantation shutters, cleaning ease is not one of them.

Close the louvers. Wipe. Push the louvers the opposite way. Wipe. Pull the shutter away from the window. Wipe the inside. Push the louvers the opposite way. Wipe. Push the shutter back towards the window.

Done.

^Agree with deegw. Our home is full of plantation shutters, and cleaning them is definitely a plus. So much easier than most window treatments.

Yes at least they are cleanable! they block a ton of light - i wouldn’t do them unless you need to reduce light. then if you want to open them fully they are huge.

So much less BREAKAGE anfd fail as well. Every part of every operable shade is China. Don't forget it. None are a five year , let alone lifetime guarantee. Folks have plantation shutters for a lot longer: ) A lot......

Shutters with larger vanes are more open than others.

I’ve had 3 homes with different types and sizes of plantation shutters. Have 3” white fake wood in one home; 2” solid wood (circa 1980) in one home and 2” wood blend (done in 2008) in my current home. I love solid wood the most. They do block light a fair amount which is a plus for my damaged eyesight. I also had 2” solid wood blinds in a former home and loved those. Very substantial weight, easy to clean, very little light leakage. If I ever replace my current shutters in my Texas home, I’ll do wood blinds.

I personally love plantation shutters, get wide louvers, and enjoy privacy and light control & easy cleaning. You only buy them once. Are those slider windows? You do have to consider if you will be opening your windows. I open my shutters and raise the double hung windows all the time for fresh air in the breakfast room, bedroom, bathroom, etc. You will need to consider that aspect.

Totally agree with wide louvers for plantation shutters. Ours are all 3.5” wide (installed by previous owners). My own choice would have been wider at 4” or 4.5”.

For cleaning, a Swiffer duster and damp cloth does the job.

I wouldn’t like plantation shutters in the kitchen you show because there is no room to open the shutters although you can open the slats. I like using them in the front of my house only. Wide slats let in pretty good light.

Plantation shutters are better suited for wider windows. Not highly recommended for the scene in the photo
