Front door design options

last year

Would love a little crowd-sourced design advice. I'm replacing the front door on my home and would like to replace with fiberglass for durability. The issue is that the door is 7' x 3' so the options are significantly limited. Additionally there are no sidelights (nor room for sidelights). Would like to have some kind of light(s) while also having privacy, and trying to figure out what style will work best such as the ones below. (They do make a style similar to what I have, but the two top lights end up pretty tiny.) Also note the first floor windows are being replaced and will look more like the second floor (white trim) when done.

IMO, the leaded glass look isn't compatible with the style of the home. The existing door looks nice and, so long as it remains protected by a storm door, is there really any reason to replace it with fiberglass?

A full view storm painted to match the door color would look better but I can understand wanting to have ventilation. (So paint the existing storm to match the door.)

You could replace with a door with clear lights and use sheer or semi sheer curtains with sash rods for privacy. Or obscuring window film that would be easy to reverse if desired.

Maybe something like this one. I don't like those leaded glass designs on traditional houses

No to the leaded glass designs. I won't mince words - they are tacky. They are for people who wish they had older houses and need to throw in a faux leaded detail to achieve it. You do have a lovely older house. You don't need this kind of stuff.

Get the second or third style of door but with regular glass. Have a curtain made that achieves your privacy and light needs. I think Jck910's example sways a little too craftsman for your home.

I agree, no leaded glass, and I would not do a fiberglass door on that house. The age and style of the house, needs a wood door. I do like the door you already have. Is there a reason, it needs to be changed?? It fits the house perfectly.

Another no to leaded glass. I would find a door with glass that mimics your new windows, such as this example.

The current door is very worn and doesn't operate well. It probably dates to the 1940s when the home was built and has been damaged over time, especially bc it is south facing. That's the reason to replace.

Panel doors with glass panels could solve your issues.

I wanted to do something like your second picture but can't find it in 7'. I've tried 3 dffereent vendors and there are just more limited options in that size. (Which makes me wonder why the vendors all seem to offer the same kinds of designs vs each offering different layouts but so it is....)

chloebud's suggestion to mimic window panes is the way to go with a new door. Other thoughts to think about after you change the door:

--Do some serious pruning of your overgrown shrubs to open up the entryway and unblock the right window. Then rethink the landscaping to enhance your house.

--think about greige trim for all your windows that blends the tan mortar and the gray roof. The white is too stark with red brick. Paint the downspout in new greige if you go that route or dark red for now--again, stark white highlights the downspout which should blend in.

Look to Provia, HMI, Homeguard or Albany. You will need to stay out of the boxes.
