What to put here?

last year
last modified: last year

Good morning, So this has been a blank space for 2 years as is most of my home since i can't commit to any decor - :-/ I am the type that looks at a magazine and says...."just order the entire exact same set up and move it in. LOL

I am struggling on what to put against this curved wall in the entryway. I've considered banquettes, curved benches, single chairs and a table, plants, vases? It is difficult as it is a modern home and a lot going on.

I prefer leather as I have a cat and hate cat hair :-)

Maybe a a bold color - dark blue - something unique? Open to ALL suggestions and if you have links to the items even better.

It is over 6' of space which I don't want to overwhelm but it definitely needs something. Also, replacing carpet on stairway - thinking a dark grey?

Thank you so much!

A curved gray leather bench would coordinate but not upstage the entry.

If the piano needs more sound absorbing material for better acoustics, you could add a large understated rug.

Just curious: What geographic area is the house in? And when was it built?

A tree or foliage plant in an attractive ceramic pot? Six feet isn't much room, and I can't see putting a console table there when you already have that shelf. Maybe a small chair and small table, but even that seems too busy.

Would love to know age of the house too?

I'm going to guess between 1988 and 1994. I am also going to guess New Jersey as the location!

  • last year

I’m also interested to know the age and location of your home.

New York. House was built in late 80s and granite floors etc added later.

Thank you. I have been searching for a grey curved leather bench but so far no luck... all are straight or upholstered. :-/

I think white leather would work as well as long as you found one with the right undertones. I would make sure it was easily returnable in case the whites end up clashing. Whites are hard to match.

OP, I agree with the bench idea, however this is a case where you're going to have to have it custom made. I don't agree you need to stick to leather; a neutral fabric will work, too.

OP stated she doesn't like to use fabric upholstery because of her cat.

OK, but whatever the material, this is a custom job.

@deegw: Right. I forgot about the cat. Then I think look for a curved backless bench--new or used--not too pricey, and get it reupholstered in leather. Thing is, curved benches lend themselves to luxury fabrics, not leather.

IMO you will need somathing as over the top as the rest of the space . Maybe a glass table curved glass to fit curve with a whit marble base and a vase filled with fresh flowers all the time It would not be expensive to get a custom made bench though

This might be the best house I've ever seen in Houzz. I'm kind of awe struck.

I don't think you necessarily need a curved piece. In fact, some linear shapes could be grounding here. Just hover it far enough away from the staircase and it should look fine. I wouldn't get into a sofa for the space. It will overwhelm. You need a small accent piece to fill the space and complement what is already there. Think settee, bench, or chair.

William Sonoma white leather bench. 63"

White leather bench with lucite legs. Love this pairing with your chandelier.

Consider two white leather Barcelona chairs angled slightly towards each other. Google white leather Barcelona and you will see tons of these in price ranges from a few hundred bucks to $10k.

If you really want a sofa, this feels a bit more like a settee - This William Sonoma sofa can be ordered in different lengths and in leather. White, ivory, light grey would all work. Or are you looking for another color? I don't think it matters if it follows the exact curve of the staircase if you pull it away from the wall a bit.

lol. I have no furniture in the formal living or dining rooms beside the piano. ..... going on a couple years without - It is soooo hard to commit. thankfully, they aren't used often at the moment. The kitchen I just remodeled once lighting goes up i will share. :-) Sharing a photo of cieling in entranyway.... I kept that - I didn't have the heart to cover it up since so unique.

You seem like an excellent candidate to hire an interior designer!!

The ceiling mural is awesome. Makes me want to see light blue leather furniture near the curved staircase.

  • last year

Yes. I had an interior designer who made drawings for a few rooms but they were sketches of furniture in the rooms and didn't give me colors or fabrics etc. I need someone to twll me exactly what to get . :-)

I think something leaning towards whimsical would be fun. This is on Wayfair Canada, but may be available on the US site. I think it‘s perfect and note the info re fabric/cats. Consider proportions, as it could overwhelm if too bulky or large.

oooohhhh what a divine space and I have no doubt the rest of your how is as glorious. You must love walking around and feeling the vibe.

I think a wild color in leather that you like in that space could be fun.

If you liked the designer who made the sketches, hire them to specify furniture to buy. You can also pay them to purchase and place it for you.

I liked him but he has a reputation of only buying the furniture from his wife's furniture store and I don't mind spending $$ for items I love but not for items limited to their pockets only.... SO, yes, I need to find another. I just never shopped for an interior designer LOL so honestly wouldn't know how to filter through them... I suppose word of mouth is best.

It’s probably easier to hire a designer than become one, but you will need to do some homework. Google is your friend. First read some articles on how to hire a designer. Like this one I just found after a minute of googling. https://www.mydomaine.com/how-to-choose-an-interior-designer. Then prepare to interview them. Have a reasonable budget and be prepared to share it. Think about how you want to work together - how much you want to be involved. Research the different ways that they can bill so you’re not surprised. Understand that markups are not price gauging, but instead are part of the way the designer is paid for managing ordering, inspecting, delivering, and installing your pieces.

Word of mouth is good, but they need to be able to (and love to) work in your style. You can search on houzz for pros in your area, too. Also many do social media advertising so you can search on TikTok for designers in your area, and then jump to their websites. Think of selection as a project that will take a few weeks at least. Don’t rush it.

In looking again at the foyer, the one thing that doesn't appear equal in the room is the ceiling mural. It doesn't seem to be at the same caliber as everything else in the room.

I like the pink settee and vase set up you posted. Your space is pretty out there and so are the three items you posted. They will go quite well together.
