It is on the sun tolerant list, but more than 4 hours I think depends upon the times of day. For instance, east facing, direct sun from 7 until 2 may be too much….. but west facing from 1 p.m. until sunset may be fine. Will there be any shade, from neighbors houses, fences or trees? That can make a difference because it gives the hosta a reprieve from the direct sunlight even if it’s for 10 minutes. Mine is west facing and gets sun from about 2:30 p.m. until sunset around 7 p.m. by the time the house shadows cover it. Those are the less intense hours of the daily sun.

I agree with ken, if you’re lucky enough to have many, why not try the sunnier space with one or two and see how it goes? If they have been mostly in shade, they may burn at first as they adjust to the sunnier location. Keep them watered and good luck!

Ken - thank you! I think I shall try it, even if the blue color disappears. That is lovely, but the shape of this hosta is such a nice contrast to others.

Debra - Thanks for your reply. One location I am considering will get sun from 11 to 4 or 5 pm. Morning is shaded by tall trees, then full sun afterwards. I could rig up a shade cloth for this, or use a beach umbrella (won't the neighbors wonder about that!) to provide less intense sunshine...

I’m forced into this experiment with my Krossa Regal. It was in shade, shrunk during the drought and water restrictions, and is now in all day full sun. I want the sun to help it grow back to its former large self, but I know it will get the uglies at some point. I’ll be watching to see how many months it takes full sun before that happens.

Roxanna, what is your location? People in WI can grow most hostas in full sun while NC will get fried.

Linda - I am in zone 6 now, thanks to the revision of the zones in recent years. Central Massachusetts near the CT border. Maybe I will get lucky in re-siting my Krossa!

Lindalana, I am surprised to hear you say Wisconsinites can grow most hosta in full sun. That is not the case for me here in Milwaukee, z6a. In my sun bed, I noticed today that several hostas were getting burned leaves. El Nĩno, Ambrosia and Nigrescens are showing some burn already. Last year I had the sail cloth up, but I was hoping that would not be necessary this year. I added many perennials in and around the hostas that need the sun. Perhaps a few hostas will need to be relocated.
