Need advice about 2000’s looking laundry chute cabinet

Hello,

We’re renoing an early 2000’s southwest home. On the second floor, there is a laundry chute cabinet we want to update. But once I looked at the cabinet, I started thinking about possibilities for updating the entire area.

There is a matching wood trim piece and built in desk on the other side of the chute area (call this a small loft?). Ideally, we’d update everything to match.

Looking to get ideas or thoughts on what we can do with the whole area and/or cabinet style/color/finish etc.

We are shooting for an updated, clean look throughout the house. For example, we’re updating the kitchen and getting slab cabinets as they look really clean.

Some notes: the wall the chute is on has some things that could be difficult/costly to move - an outlet, a thermostat and two wall sconces. Also, there is a railing and an overlook to the first floor nearby which probably prevents increasing the side of the cabinet.

I'm a bit confused - is the chute in the wall and in the cabinet floor? Do you actually use it?

Either way, if it was my house, I'd remove them. Remove the sconces and patch up the holes in the wall Then, cover the floor hole, and put a long, narrow cabinet on the wall. That will give you the clean look.

Do you use the laundry chute? If not, removing it would expand your options.

I would paint the whole space the same color (pick a deep rich color you love to help camo the computer) paint the desk, laundry chute and the walls and trim the same color... create a gallery wall where the sconces, thermostat, etc. ... I have a third floor chute, my space is painted SW Virtual Taupe. I have leather door pulls that blend in. SW Naval would be a good color too.

Since it's in the floor, you could remove the cabinet entirely and remove the trim around the shoot. Replace it with a door surfaced with the same stuff your flooring is. You could do a long low bench with a lifting lid in it to cover the floor hole. Have pillar legs to disguise the floor hole if you need to leave under the center of the bench open for the outlet.

Do you use it? If you do and you find that it is useful then that dictates the parameters of the design.

It seems like the flooring goes around the cabinet and desk? Are you planning on new flooring for this area? Personally, I would love a laundry chute in my two story home. I would store a sewing kit and wardrobe essentials like stain stick or a steamer. Could this cabinet just be painted or left alone for now until the time you are redoing the floors?

Wanted to update as we (mostly) finished this job. Thanks for all the feedback and tips.

What we ultimately did:
Painted the cabinet
Replaced old cabinet doors with new slab doors and pained them to match the cabinet
Added black hardware
Removed the wall sconces
Had LED recessed lighting installed
Painted desk
Painted ledge
Printed out a picture from a trip to Italy. Framed and hung it on the wall.
Wifey decorated.

All in all, we’re pretty happy with how things turned out. Really happy we did this work. We’re still figuring out what to put to the left of the chute cabinet.
