How to make this room look less modern

Hi,

were looking at purchasing our dream home. problem is the kitchen and living room are a little too modern for our liking. we are very traditional & cozy ( think cape cod lakehouse ). other than a large reno , any ideas how we could make this space more to our taste?thanks!

Take a pass. This isn't your home. This is never going to have a cottage appearance.

This is about as cozy as you're going to get.

I'm not a fan of modern homes, but this one is beautiful. If you like the location and other amenities, then buy it and as Debbie Washburn said, furnish it with more traditional pieces.

You can just as easily furnish a traditional home with modern furniture as vice versa.

Once it’s empty it’s more of a blank slate. Add some colour in furniture and art and plants. We love our sectional in our modern home. For stools in the kitchen get something softer. Maybe fabric chairs for eating area. It’s quite lovely

Kamilla, the decidedly contemporary windows are the biggest influence of style, not the furnishings.

It’s a beautiful home, but I prefer traditional too. I’d pass on this. I don’t think it’ll ever be your cozy cape.

@Kamilla Don't give up Once the house is empty you can find a better path. I think you could easily make this home your home. If you are able, higher a designer to help you navigate your way to making this your cape cod beach house space. You might have to make some changes while still working with the space.

Light fixtures, maybe the island, add molding and trim, repaint the cabinets or work with the black, repaint the window frames... Or keep the black. A good designer can help you find your dreams within the space.

There is nothing traditional about any part of that house except for the incongruous crown molding. Lovely house but not for you.

Looks like several sections of flat roof--how to manage the snow load?

Where are flat roofs shown and where did OP say they live somewhere with snow?

You could redo the fireplace, maybe add a wood stove there instead with a more traditional stone or brick behind it, redo the built-ins in a warmer wood in a different style, maybe have a built in to stack wood where one of the cabinets is. You can change all the light fixtures, replace the countertops taking out the waterfall. Paint the walls a warm color, add rugs with warmth and color, same with draperies. Buy cozier furniture. Put in barstools that are upholstered with backs. Lots of things you can do if you throw enough money at it.

Not this woodstove or the gray stone or furnishings, but to show the bookcase/firewood holder

Exterior photos and location in the real estate listing.

How did you find that info? I didn’t see it shared anywhere in the thread.

It wasn’t. theres no flat roofs on this house. the snow load isnt a problem

So, some easy things you could do: add open shelving instead of the uppers in the kitchen, change lighting fixtures, add stone to the fireplace facade, place lots of plants - and then your textiles and furniture will tell the story. It's a beautiful home - once it's a blank space and you add a few touches, I think you'll be very happy.

theres no flat roofs on this house.

That is a good thing. 2D deception, then.

Another concern is that the garage doors are not on the gable end coupled with a low friction roof. Also splashback and soil drainage--no eaves. Just trying to encourage you to keep your eyes wide open and anticipate some potential problems.
