Thoughts on Home Depot Thomasville kitchen cabinets?

Hi has anyone renovated their kitchen through Home Depot and chose Thomasville cabinets? How was your experience?

Forget the box stores. Get out of there and go to a dealer who sells Kemper, Diamond, or Schrock. That's the same exact cabinet, but with better design help, and a better price from a dealer.

I think here in Canada they are exclusive to Home Depot

Thomsasville is just a made up name attached to another manufacturer's product. Like Kenmore was for Sears. They make no cabinets. They just rebadge labels. There's no exclusivity anywhere.

I designed a couple kitchens on the standard 3" increment so the clients could choose whatever cabinets they wanted, and they went with Thomasville for price, and they were satisfied with them. I felt like the finish could have been a little better on some, and I did not think the trash pullout was very sturdy. And they seemed to have held up pretty well with reasonable use. One of the clients, who is pretty hard on things did eventually break the trash pullout.

Go to a dealer and get Kraftmaid. I've not heard great things about Thomasville.

Yep, Minardi speaks the truth. I've been preaching that here for years....ever since it was the Gardenweb forum (1990s).

I do have to say that two out of two times that I walked into Home Depot with the client and said, "I have some plans, and we are ready to order kitchen cabinets" that the person at the design desk was dismissive. Both times the client just wanted to leave but the second time I had warned the client that they may act this way. But the second time the sales person was actually hostile. He snorted and said "Oh? I really, sincerely doubt that."

I just said, "well maybe not because I have a couple questions," and I pulled out my complete construction documents with a list of everything I needed, and the list of trim pieces I had questions about, and spread them out.

So he did have the grace to apologize. But he said that virtually everyone who walks in and says that has a sketch on a piece of paper with the overall dimensions and almost nothing else.

And sure enough, while we were going over our order, a woman walked up, butted right in and said, "I need some kitchen cabinets" and pulled out a paper towel with something drawn on it, and said "Oh and there's a window and a couple doors in here too".

When she walked off he said. "That's why I treated you like I did."

Thomasville cabinets are great. They have a carry a lifetime warranty and stand behind their product. The Nouveau line is manufactured specifically by Thomasville in Winnipeg Canada, and not by a third party. I have them in my home and can attest to the quality. Depending on your door style they have dovetailed wood drawers and have the option to use plywood carcasses instead of melamine. They use very strong quality hardware, unlike some in where I have seen drawer glides riveted (was a vanity) instead of screwed into the sides. They are semi-custom, but also have tons of sizes which keeps the cost down. As for the designers, use your judgement, as there are some really excellent designers with degrees in those box stores. If your not comfortable with who your working with, ask if there is another designer.

Hi we are probably going with the nouveau quin maple cabinet in starlight and tumbleweed for the island. What do you mean by dovetailed? We are going to be finalizing tomorrow. Would you happen to have any pics of your kitchen that you don’t mind sharing? 😊

Any designers with degrees in box stores are failures in the private sector. Which is not a good thing. You can make 3x the money, with no nights or Sundays worked, if you are even half decent. The gotcha is that if you keep making mistakes, and not learning from them, you lose your job. Box stores are a haven for the inexperienced, the mistake prone fumblers, and the scared to succeed.

Wow.. pretty harsh comments and to the assumption that you know everyone's life experience. Classy.

Yeah, pretty harsh for sure. I don't know much, if anything about Thomasville cabinets. The only pre-built cabinets that I have experience with was Kraftmaid, and I thought they were pretty good quality, but then I ran across Conestoga RTA cabinets, and was amazed at their quality. A lot of people hear RTA and think cheap, but not these. Blum hardware, not some Chinese knock off, and I mean no disrespect to Chinese products, as they have their place in the cabinet market. Anyways, I do about 3-kitchens a year, and nothing but Conestoga cabinets for the last 10+ years. They only have a few re-sellers, and I have work with them all. Cabinet Authority has the best prices, but if you need some design help, check out Cabinet Place Online, or Cabinet Joint.

I have done three sets of cabinets with Home Depot/ Thomasville: a full kitchen in 2001, a second full kitchen in a different house in 2013, and two bathrooms and a laundry room in 2021. The manufacturer of the cabinets from 2001 and 2013 is not the same as the manufacturer of the cabinets in 2021. I definitely noticed a difference in the quality. Although the ones in 2021 were painted cabinets, and the other sets were stained. We used the same installer for 2001 and 2013. He was known as their best cabinet installer. He definitely did a better job in 2001. I think he retired at the end of 2013. we installed our own cabinets in 2021, because the installation price was so high. My experience with the cabinet designers has been excellent. They also come out and do a measure that you pay for. I found that the contractor who they used to measure in 2021 didn’t know how to use his tape measure, and I had to go back to the cabinet designer and tell her that he had measured thewall an inch wrong. I noticed that you asked what dove tails are. That is concerning to me, because it means that you haven’t really checked into how cabinets are made, and what it is important to look for. In the first kitchen, we did have a kitchen designer who did the cabinet plan before I took it to Home Depot. There were some really bad things that happened that had nothing to do with Home Depot. We were actually excited just to find reasonably priced cabinets. I have never heard of Conestoga as Mitch mentions above, but I’m always interested to learn about new things. In 2021, our designer would not let us order from the Thomasville line that came exclusively from Canada. She said that when the boxes were being delivered to customers, there were so many broken pieces and wrong orders that it stalled everybody’s project for months. That may have gotten better post Covid.

Thomasville has always been made by Masterbrand cabinets, and is the Kemper/Diamond/Schrock duplicate private label Thomasville name. There are multiple plants that have produced these goods. The Auburn, AL plant was closed in 2018 due to the age and lack of technological production processes. The Arthur IL plant ramped up their production to meet the added load.

Box stores have never focused on training their cabinet sellers. And yes, a good kitchen designer can make 4x what a box store pays. Draw your own conclusions.

Also, box stores have moved well away from having cabinet sellers inside the stores, and into Virtual appointments with designers. The few stores that maintain cabinet sellers, well, they are the ones that didn't qualify for the Virtual positions. They pay the Virtual folks more than the store folks, but still not as much as the private sector. The biggest bonus to them is working from home, and no consequences for the mistakes made. No one in the stores, and few up the chain, understand kitchen design, or the mistakes that can occur. If the designer blames it on the cabinet company, the consumer and the store manager tends to believe them. But, cabinet company mistakes are pretty rare in reality. It's generally always a wrong entry by the designer.

There are about 2,000 Home Depot locations in the United States. How can someone possibly make a blanket statement about how good or bad they are? Each one is it's own entity with their own employees.

In my 41 years in the business....I can say there are very few good "designers" at the box stores. Back in the day when box stores gave away the layouts and my customers would bring them in to me for a comparison price, the layouts were always pretty bad.

Zumi's comments ARE a harsh reality.

Think about it like this: Would you want a heart surgeon with only 6 months of "training" by a box store? Or would you want a heart surgeon with 41 years experience? Would you want a heart surgeon that goofs all the time....but you get your hearty surgery at a discount because they messed up? I don't think so.

Minardi, I think our 2001 Thomasville cabinets were made by Woodmark. I know that you are correct that the 2021 cabinets are now made by Masterbrand. I know that it is very challenging for those who are designers and pros in this space to compete against behemoths like Home Depot and Lowe’s. For me, the difference that is often here on Houzz, people talk about hundred thousand dollar kitchens. That’s more like what I want to pay for the whole house. 🤣 I’m definitely a DIY girl.

I remodeled the kitchen at my husband's office (cabinets and a sink, no oven, no cooktop) using InnerMost frameless cabinets from Home Depot about 8-10 years ago. It was a pretty easy design, and there were no problems whatsoever with it. So the HD designer was fine, but again, it was an easy design. Sadly, the InnerMost cabinets are unfortunately no longer made. They have held up wonderfully and appear to be great quality.

I am remodeling my kitchen now, and I initially looked into the Thomasville line at Home Depot because there are few makers of frameless European design cabinets with slab doors and "interesting" finishes without going to the European showroom stores for big money. I passed based on comments on the internet dissing Thomasville. I don't know if those comments were really justified, and this was during Covid when everything was weird. I regret not digging in further, because I really liked the Noveau line.

I too liked the Nouveau line, because they had a true navy. That was the line that the designers said that they were having so many problems with during Covid.

There has been a long standing partnership with Masterbrand for all of Depot's private label cabinets, including the Martha Stewart line, the old frameless Premier line, and one of the first RTA, Mills Pride. No Thomasville cabinets have ever been made by Woodmark. They do make the current Hampton Bay lines that are stocked in some stores, while Masterbrand makes Lowes in stock ones.

Lowes had a really slick looking European slab doors frameless line called Latitude a while back. I liked the look, but I think the online reviews were not good.

“Think about it like this: Would you want a heart surgeon with only 6 months of "training" by a box store? Or would you want a heart surgeon with 41 years experience?”

LOL… so if your choice is between the cardiothoracic surgeon with six months of training or the one in their mid 70’s… you might just want to reevaluate the importance of your surgery.

I would argue that sometimes you need a talented designer and sometimes someone with six months training will do the trick.

There is typically a difference between private label and rebadged products. Private label products are made by one company to another company‘s specifications. The quality of the products the manufacturer normally makes is largely irrelevant. The best cabinetmaker on the planet could agree to manufacture much lower quality cabinets for a private label and vice versa. Rebadging is one company’s product sold as a different company’s.

I strongly suspect that Home Depot has some control over the quality of sold under their brand, for better or worse.

My advice: don't buy them. I ordered bathroom vanity cabinetry from them through Home Depot four months ago and was told to expect them delivered in a month. Six weeks later, they arrived with the wrong fronts. A reorder was placed and a partial delivery arrived six weeks later. Another reorder for the remaining two door fronts arrived a month later, but I received only one of the items. So now, after four months, HD is reordering the final item which I won't receive for yet another month. All of this frustration and inconvenience for only seven cabinets. Master Brands makes Thomasville along with a handful of other brands and in my opinion deserves to go out of business. They are a bunch of morons who can't get orders correct and send out shoddy product.

All orders are transmitted electronically, and then bar codes are created for the job that must be scanned at every production station before moving forward. There is no physical way to have an order be the wrong door style or finish, unless it were ordered that way by the cabinet person. Setting the wrong timing expectations is the cabinet specialists fault. Reordering wrong, repeatedly, is the cabinet specialist's fault. In fact, there is not one thing there that could be attributed to the cabinet manufacturer. And that is why knowledgeable people say to never buy from a box store. Because they do not train their cabinet people. The private sector does, and does more than 8 hours of videos.

The ridiculous expectations of people never cease to amaze me. If you want knowledge and customer service, you do not go to a box store. You go to a private sector dealer. Manufacturers shouldn't even sell through box stores. Stupid people associate the employee failures with the manufacturer.

I had Thomasville Classic installed in 2009. Small kitchen in a small urban home; the price point fit. No heavy lifting as far as design work was needed and the HD guy I worked with was great.

The cabinets have held up well. Some of the cabinet soft-close components (PDMs) start failing and Thomasville under lifetime warranty sends new hinges with integrated soft-close. They work great but admittedly it's kind of a pain to remove the doors and replace the hinges, vs. removing and replacing a PDM closer on the box frame. The soft-close drawers all still work great.

    I've been very happy.
