TV room layout help

My dilema…the front door has no entry and opens into tv room where you walk between tv and seating to pass through the house. The only two spaces for the tv is right next to the stairs, causing all company entering to walk in front of the tv OR the opposite wall, and I am
Not sure there is enough depth to the room. We are going to remodel the staircase and I really do not want the tv sitting in front of it once it’s done, if I can find an alternative. I up measured about 120” of depth available if I was to place tv on opposite wall and still
Leaving about 24” walking path space at the most narrow point. Is 120” enough space for a console, coffee table and sofa? The tv is 63” and we entertain especialy during football season and watch a lot of movies as a family so comfort and plenty seating is important. Also to consider, is it bad design to enter to the back of a couch? Our current sectional is 80” in depth and will most likely be down sizing if we change the layout of furniture. I like the idea of a sofa and two accent chairs that swivel.

It would be easier if I could see a floor plan and the other side of the room.

No, it is not wrong to enter to the backmof the sofa if it is done right. Right would mean enough space to comfortably walk behind the sofa and, ideally, a hall table on the back of the sofa to define the entry way.

I would expect 10 feet to be plenty of room, but if you sibtract 3 feet for walk space, it might be pretty tight.

We don't know how you plan to remodel the staircase, but this could be an option.

A floor plan with all dimensions would definitely help to give you layout suggestions.

If you rotate your sectional so it's under the window, then the ottoman section would be the portion that has its back to the door...it doesn't sound imposing. It's worth a try. Try moving it and post a photo, please, to see if it works.

Iam loving all the suggestions, let me share measurements which will make it more realistic. Lisedv, love this layout, I need to measure again but I think there’s only 24” for walkway, but let me double check my measurements…

Ok here’s photos of additional angles, I also measured the main walls, the spacing at the front door is especialy challengingl, as the 6ft wall is set back, so what would be the “hall” space narrows where the closet starts. Additionaly, if there is just enough space to switch the layout, then would the area where the tv is currently, have to remain open for walking space? I would like to have some entry table….

I can send more photos angles if it’s helpful. Thank you!

It's hard for me anyway to visualize even with the floor plan and the photos. Have you ever tried rotating the sectional to see if it fits? You're the only one in the actual room. If the TV were moved there might be enough room to squeeze behind the sofa from the front door.

It's not like you're going to be moving heavy equipment behind it.

Place the TV on the wall the sectional is on, float a couch and get a couple swivel chairs. If you have parties during football season consider a sofa table with stools for additional seating. People like to float/move around when watching sports so having seating that people can get in and out of easily is ideal (every time I sit in a sectional I feel like I'm trapped there and can't get out). You don't have enough space for having people sitting there full-time but for a few sundays a year it would be manageable.

(We just installed a bar height half wall with a counter and stools behind our theater seats in our basement - and those spots are the first taken when we've had sports-watching parties. Actually, more people prefer to just perch there than sit on the theater seats, and half the time people don't even use the stools, they just stand there).

Tracefloyd, you are right, I won’t be moving heavy equipment around behind it. I always just want a well designed space and wasn’t sure if it’s a good design to switch it around. Or if the current set up is bad taste like O think it is. Thank you for your input!

anj_p, I like your thinking in regards the which seating guests are drawn to. I totally agree that sections can feel trapped. I would love to do a couch and swivels if the space allows. Do you agree with me that the current situation is not ideal, especialy with a new staircase being installed or is it not a big problem from a design perspective?

The current location of your TV is not ideal. You need to put it on the wall and put your seating with the back to the door. Virtually everyone will tell you that's the best way to lay out the room.

Nothing in your space is in bad taste. Think of it this way, it may be a little tight but the ottoman section will be right there so it's not too closed off. And the ottoman with a big bright pillow is a nice inviting focal point for the eye other than the stairs or TV....it acts as the entry seating. If something feels comfy and inviting it's because of taking in how we move around the actual space and 18 to 20" is surprisingly enough room to maneuver comfortably around furniture.

I picture the sectional nestled into the corner to the right of the door up against the window. A petite console table would fit under the deerhead behind it.

If the new staircase involves closing the space where the TV is now...that will really limit your options. Have you thought about tearing out the closet by the stairs that seems to be in the way? See how much of that wall could possibly be removed. If not the whole thing. That is something to consider before the work begins. Then if the staircase is not widened, it would really open things up that way.

Iam following…the staircase remodel will be cosmetic and keeping exact footprint…here is the inspo. for that remodel. I have already purchased the balusters, rail and post.
I would love to remove closet and open it up but I am thinking it won’t work because this is in the ceiling in closet…some kind of electrical or something…but if it was possible, that would deepen the room a lot!
Other dilema then to solve is this home has very little storage, this is the only closet besides the bedrooms.

Staircase remodel inspo…you can see why having a tv there especially after remodeling it would be a shame. Maybe I should cut my losses and keep the staircase as is and not change anything?

Honestly it doesn't matter what you do with the staircase, your current set up is not ideal. You shouldn't have to walk between a TV and a couch through a room. It's not TASTE, it's just good functional layout. Sometimes you have to lay stuff out that way but I don't think you do.

So, regardless what you do with the stairs, flip your living room so the TV is on the wall. You can do that now (even though your sectional size is probably too big for it to look good, you can get an idea). Leave 3' from the stairs. Based on your drawing you should have almost 12' to arrange furniture. That is enough.

That is great news to me! Thank you😁 the cable is wired for the room with a fireplace and that would break a neck to watch tv that high! So this room was what we chose for tv…I’ve never loved it but didn’t want to hire cable to be moved…I am going to re arrange with existing furniture and plan from there based on these recommendations. Thank you for your input!

Swing your sectional around to face the wall where the art work is. This will also give you seating that faces the window on the short side and create a small separation between desk area behind it. Get a long, low console like the one shown below that goes almost all the way across--or bookshelves for storage. Put your current console, if it fits, on the back of the sofa as a landing spot for keys, gloves, extra storage. If it takes up too much room, rehome it.

Why are you planning to spend so much money on a new staircase? It's fine. Instead use the space that is likely underneath the stairs for additional storage or shelves.

...they do make mantel mounts so you can lower the TV if it's over a fireplace if your other room would be better for TV watching/set up.

That is a good idea, my fireplace has a large window on top of it….assuming that would be a problem for mounting the tv. Otherwise I would totally do that. And the only other walls have big windows I don’t want to block.

Housegal200, I just personally love a beautiful staircase, I had one in my childhood home so it’s just a personal preference and I would prefer not to do under stair storage unless it was hidden panel, to prevent a more cluttered look. I do love the furniture arrangement, Iam hoping to do something along those lines. I like how you pointed out it will create separation from the desk area. Thank you!

Can anyone say if a 12 fr by 9ft rig would work with the updated furniture placement facing the opposite wall?

Use painters tape on the floor to determine sizes and placement of rugs, furniture.

Thank you tracefloyd, that’s a great technique!
