The Hospital and a broken hip

Yes, I broke mine yesterday morning, had surgery at 4 pm and am still in the hospital. I was at my usual Tuesday morning volunteer gig at the botanical garden greenhouses. Several of us were planning to clean out and organize what we call the ’pot barn’ which is an open air storage area for various size plastic pots. Someone had propped a tabletop-type piece against the entry and I tripped on it. I caught the toe of my left foot on it and it sort of spun me sideways. I landed hard on my right hip and knew right away it was bad.

An ambulance transported me to the ER where i got X-rays and was admitted for surgery. I am fortunate they could do the surgery the same day and the surgeon was excellent. DD is a Nurse Practitioner, formerly worked in the ED and still has ’connections’ and friends within the hospital. I had great treatment.

DH took this photo of the screen the ED doc showed us. I now have a rod holding my hip bones in place. The surgery itself only took around 30 minutes; the ER and surgery prep and waiting a lot longer.

Last night and today was fun-filled…BP readings, blood draws (at 3:30 am?), asking if i had peed, taking a bladder scan, more BP readings and blood draws, a catheter at 5:30, muscle relaxers to calm the muscle spasms (the worst part of all this), then PT around 8:30 this morning. I hope to go home tomorrow after a PT session with stairs.

Be careful folks. This was the most painful injury EVER!

So, so sorry Outside!! I had a falling-down-the-stairs accident a few years ago that caused many broken bones and much trauma to my body all over. It's just crazy how you can be going about your everday life minding your own business, when WHAM, things change in a split second. You sound strong! Your positive attitude will keep you in good stead, I'm sure.

Ouch! So glad you were treated promptly and are comfortable.

I think the hardest thing for me after my hip procedure was remembering to not cross my legs, hope that’s your biggest problem too.

Do you have a recliner? 😊 (See another thread here.) This is why having one before you need it is a good idea.

    Hope you heal quickly.

Oh dear, Outside, I'm so sorry to hear about this. As I'm recovering from a fall resulting in a fractured tibia and then surgery, I can relate to the suddenness that a misplaced step can cause to one's "normal" life and mobility.

You are so fortunate that surgery was performed that very day and your DD helped everything come together. I had a niece in that role with my injury and it made all the difference.

I'm amazed that you are up with PT and talking about steps already!!! I was non weight-bearing for 6 long weeks post surgery and a single step was like a mountain to me.

Take your meds, follow instructions, let others do what they can for you, ask for help when you need it. You will come through this.

I am so sorry to hear that, but also so glad you are receiving such great care and starting out so strong with PT. That can make all the difference. @Barncatz, that is the absolute truth. Everyone should read your comment. I recall rolling over after the fall to my left side and being in the fetal position with the bad hip on top. I couldn’t move my right leg so I stayed there until the EMS folks moved me to the gurney, which was painful for an instant.

@Bunny, maddielee, and others who have been thru something similar, i know you understand the level of pain. It‘s been quite a revelation.

The care at our hospital was excellent. We have a new Ortho & Spine center that was completed a couple of years ago, attached to the main hospital. The few times I’ve been in a hospital setting i’ve tried to be a ’good patient’, and it does pay off.

My deepest gratitude to all my good friends here with your words of encouragement and concern. I did get home yesterday afternoon and it was so good to take a shower and sleep in my own bed. Yes, we have a recliner, thankfully. It's several years old, leather, but right now I don’t care. It could be purple striped with pink polka dots if its doing its job.

I’ve been mostly sleeping, the result of drugs and just being too tired to do much else.

PT at home is still being arranged. I’m waiting for a phone call but maybe all those come at the end of the day. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Followup appointment with the ortho surgeon is in 3 weeks.

Again, thank you all. Sending a virtual hug to eqch of you.

April! such a sweet surprise to hear from you, and thank you!

A quick update….PT at home will start likely Tuesday. I have a few PT things to do they showed me in the hospital. Nothing too stressful. A nurse with the service came this afternoon to do the evaluation, vitals, and paperwork. I’ve never rested so much in my life. Probably a good think since the heat index was 100 today. DS #1 and his son came up from Birmingham for a short visit today. DD is down with a mild cold so she is staying home; DS #2 is out in Idaho camping and fishing with DGS #2 so they have been sending videos of their adventures.

Pain is a little better and my walking is a little better. OMG the bruises on my hip and thigh! Just noticed those today. Looks as if someone very heavy walked all over my thigh and butt. My thigh is also very swollen down to the knee, and fortunately my ankles are not.

Glad to hear you aer settling in and the pain is getting more manageable. I am sure it is nice to have some visitors and it IS good to rest and to heal. It is a good time to pick up some books and escape for a little bit each day!

Hope PT goes well and that your walking continues to improve! Take good care!

    Mdln, 🤣

I have been proud of fhe fact I have pretty good balance (thanks to Pilates) and didn’t worry much about falling. At almost 76, I am cautious, and falling and having an injury like this was one of my greatest fears. And it happened!

Outside, I'm so sorry this happened to you. I'm surprised and delighted you're already home! Is your shower safe? I fell in ours in my 30s. :)

The one positive of your fall is from now on when you walk you'll look to make sure nothing is in the way, but don't forget to look up to see where you're going. lol I still do that since my fall last year.

Yes, they take blood at 3:30am. Not fun. A recliner is a must for everyone no matter how ugly they can be, or how old a person is.

In our "Don't Fall Down" class they nagged us about being conscious about walking heel down first, not flat footed. After a certain Thursday night event, a body language expert explained some of the nerve loss/weakenings in your feet that explain why you are more likely to fall as you age. The shuffling you might use to feel steadier because of the weakened nerves causes another set of fall risks. It was interesting.

The very night I "graduated" and got my certificate ( 🎆 ) , I tripped over a piece of metal buried in some dirt and fell flat. My face looked like I had been rubbed with sandpaper. It's impossible to eliminate all tripping hazards but I do try to scan the ground ahead and always use my phone flashlight when walking anywhere dark, which I hadn't been doing that night.

Outside, what an ordeal. I bet the bruising is both horrifying and funny in its own really macabre way.

    OutsidePlaying thanked barncatz

Thanks, barncatz! After walking all over Italy for 2 weeks, DD and I felt very fortunate we didn’t have any accidents on uneven surfaces or the cobblestones, but we sure did witness lots of near misses! We kept our eyes ahead and saw lots of hazards and managed to avoid them. Then bam!

The bruising is, I’m pretty sure, mostly due to all the manipulating to get the rod in the femur. The swelling is getting a little better and the pain is a lot better and so is my mobility. I’ve had 2 PT sessions and those went very well, plus I do the exercises on my own twice a day.

Thanks again to all for your caring comments, concern and prayers.

I, too, am surprised by your recovery rate. That That’s wonderful! (Note to self: keep doing balance exercises!)
