It depends on where you live and how much you’ll use a coat closet. Will a row of hooks by the door suffice?

I should have clarified since it's more for the shoes. We don't wear shoes in the house and there is no other storage area near the entrance.

You can do an extremely small powder room. It just needs a toilet at the end and a small sink on the side. You just need to be sure that the door is wide enough to accommodate all body types.

I'd keep the coat closet. Small bathrooms aren't a problem. You aren't there for long. It's very hard to keep an entry looking neat without a closet.

The closet does not need to be full depth at 24" if it is mostly for shoes, and then you could have some hooks for jackets and such. Try a 24" and maybe a 15"-18" depth version on paper.

Maybe a floor plan since we are working in the dark. Post it here in jpeg format in a comment make sure it is to scale. . If all it is to store are shoes and this is afamily entry take the shoes to the bedrooms . But if for guests or many family you need a closet or the mess is a mess. Pictures are alo good all here in comments DO NOT start another post.

Instead of a shoe closet, do you have room for a shoe cabinet near the entryway?

A to scale floor plan would be very helpful in helping you out.

My vote tiny powder room large enough for a large men to enter but not so big you can't have a closet.

Where is the closest guest bathroom if not at the door? I don't find that arrangement overly welcoming, but it is seen in newer homes. If you have your guests remove their shoes no closet or storage cabinet is an answer. You need an open bench they can tuck them under so they aren't getting tripped on when the next person comes in. Pocket door is the answer to small areas.

I would not do a pocket door on a guest powder room, specially near the front door. In the last 30 years I have only experienced one pocket door that actually had a lock-set that worked as intended and actually locked the door properly ... it was at a 100 year old upscale resort hotel in FL.

#2 DD has all pocket doors in her home. It's only 60 yrs old but the doors all work/lock just fine. If it would make guests feel better put a secondary lock on the door. With pocket doors they do tend to be open when not being used so it's sort of a 'being used' signal when the door is shut.
