'Hacksaw' flower oddity

last modified: 2 years ago

I've had 'Hacksaw' since 2009 so I've seen it in bloom numerous times but never have encountered a scape where none of the buds opened into flowers. At first I couldn't quite believe my eyes so I started to take pictures frequently, like every couple of days if not every day just to make sure I wasn't deceiving myself.

As you can see, the earliest buds are drying up but I have not seen any open flowers.

Here is the cluster the next day, no open flowers.

2 days later, still no open flowers and an increasing number of drying buds on the lowest part of the scape.

Still, another 3 days and no flowers.....

While I do have a seedling out of 'Ray of Hope' and sieboldii, which I call 'Tousled Hair' that has what are probably best described as fused flowers that never open, they do look a quite a bit different from what I see here. A second scape popped up about 10 days ago but none of the buds are at flowering stage as yet but you can bet I'm keeping a close eye on that one. And documenting it, of course.

Has anyone else ever seen behaviour like this in any other hosta?

Pieter
