Black locust? Robinia? I think you might need to remove completely. One in a nearby neighborhood was radically pruned in such a manner but resprouted quite vigorously from both the trunk, any remaining branches and from the root system.

I agree. I think for sure it would re-sprout.

Perhaps you could have the stump ground out rather than apply poison.

Re sprouting from the ground is a hassle but I can just keep snipping the suckers. Resprouting at 25’ is a new problem.

It will resprout as said. Brother has an uprooted B locust that has resprouted along the fallen trunk (there are still a couple areas of the root crown in the ground).

Having heated with wood for many years (though no longer), I can say that black locust is the best firewood in the world. Can you offer the wood to someone who heats with wood?

Oh the wood will not be wasted. Not only for burning (highest btu of all woods) but fence posts and dock wood I love black locust. Their high gothic branching, beautiful flowering, delicate leaves that create dappled light but no litter, the fragrance.. They are considered an invasive weed farther upstate. So much so that I happily rented a truck to go up to a state park around Albany to load up up on locust trunks to use for fencing in a Bronx park. They were desperate to get rid of them. When new ones sprout around my property I sometimes leave them, knowing that even when they become giants they won't take up space or block sun. Just as long as they don't take out another car or roof! The branches weigh a ton!
