Cherry does darken with time.

The sample in the showroom just be older.

What you want to see is how it will look eventually, not just today. You need to like what cherry looks like today, but you need to love what it will become.

There are websites that will show how different wood species change over time. I don't know if Kraftmaid has any examples on their specific lines or not.

Also cherry wood can vary greatly in color. You can see this in the top sample’s right side. In the past Kraftmaid did not guarantee uniformity of color in their cherry cabinet doors; e.g., some rails may be bright yellow wood next to a red panel.

Interestingly, the Kraftmaid cherry shortbread door sample and assembled kitchen photos on the Lowes website are as different as those shown in your photo. If you have wood floors as shown in your photo, maybe you should choose painted base cabinets to avoid disappointment. You'd still have plenty of wood in your kitchen. Just a thought.

The store samples have also been handled regularly with oily/dirty hands, and probably left in hot cars, so I would definitely expect them to be different from any new/clean samples.
