Help! Another cabinet?

last modified: 2 years ago

the original kitchen wall design had two floating shelves next to hood. However, after installing the backsplash we felt it would look strange. I wish I had another cabinet to the right. Should I add a small cabinet or not?

There’s not enough room for another cabinet, and another cabinet wouldn’t balance the other side, which is tall and 24” deep. How about going back to the original design of floating shelves? I have no idea if shelves can be installed onto the stone now.

Some type of spice rack is the only thing you might conside for the area,r and you've got light switches in the way of doing that.

Leav ittas is and get a nice holder for gadgets are better yet put them in a drawer the one on the right they just take away from the nice wall.

Get a nice piece of pottery (larger) and place it on the right, and move your tools into it on the other side. That will help balance things more.

A slightly bigger hood would have filled things in.

I would get nicer containers for the cooking utensils. Also curate the utensil selection to remove the neon colored ones!

when I looked at the photo I thought you must be doing a ledge . seems you have a cool understated kind of aesthetic..... I think a longer ledge would suit the wall but not sure an open ledge vs an actual cabinet is going to satisfy what you have in mind for use.

this is something I think would be useful.. You have 72 inches or so?

As mentioned the overstuffed utensil containers take away from the clean look. Keep one container with basic spoon, spatulas, fork, tongs (1 of each) and put the rest in a drawer where they will stay nice and clean until ready to use. The space gives your eye a place to rest.

Am going to suggest adding shelving back to the right side of the wall. Glass shelving might look nice but will have to be cleaned often since it is adjacent to the hood. The other idea I have is to install a vertical pot and pan rack to the empty portion of the wall.

Too bad your designer just didn’t center the range/hood on that wall, having equal size drawer bases on the sides.

Personaly, I’d keep the countertops mostly clear since you have very little countertop space for cooking.

The wall space to the right of the hood is too narrow for shelves to balance with the open space to the left of the hood, imho. What about adding a battery powered sconce?

I couldn’t find a great example of an off centered hood with a sconce on one side, but sort of like this?

As others have said, I would remove the clutter and put cooking tools away in a drawer. Anything next to the range is bound to get covered in grease over time. Although I believe symmetry is overrated, you might consider a couple of items to the right of the range if you feel you need “balance.” Perhaps a natural element such as a wooden cutting board. If it were me, however, I’d leave it alone and use the counter space as counter space. Clean and uncluttered.

agree, I know you need those things to cook, but when they're out on the top like that it just looks cluttered. Keep a few out in a nice crock, the others below in container until you're ready to cook.

I'd prob do something like this

    diff hood vent

this vent hood and shelves could be an option w/yours. or, look how they did the decor on the countertop

or, this entire set up would look nice over your top. hood, shelves, everything

(notice the wood cutting boards behind the stove. and the wood trivets on the countertop to hold a few items. )

I appreciate everyone’s feedback! at this point I am not going to add another cabinet or shelf. All your ideas are much appreciated and will clean up the space a bit to avoid clutter.

Congratulations on completing kitchen construction! Add some wood & neutral accessories on the right side then consider painting the hood white rather than changing it out. Enjoy
