Looks like an oak to me. What makes you think it isn't?

I'm going to guess it's a white oak and Dwarf Chinkapin Oak, Quercus prinoides. If it really is, its a beautiful oak that grows to only 20 ft. tall. This is the perfect tree Ive been searching for. It's native to Illinois also. What part of Canada do you live in rouge?🙂 I'm not 100 percent sure but a few people here are good with trees like Ben, Bill, and Dave.

I was just thinking that the leaves were too "sharp"/serrated for an oak. I was imagining for an oak leaf that the lobes were more rounded.

I'd agree w/Jay -- leaves look like chinkapin oak. Subtle but identifiable differences from swamp white or chestnut oak. A dwarf chinkapin oak would make a fine large shrub/small tree.

Interesting - I've only known it spelled with 'QU' instead of a 'K' - it's the same tree, correct?

Jay, OKIOS treecrops used to offer a dwarf chinkapin oak selection that fruited very young and had a pic of one maybe 6 X 6 ft, very densely-leafed and just loaded w/acorns. Description stated that it turned golden yellow in autumn. Alas, out of business......
