What do you want to know? In my location any corn planted after July 1st results in smaller ears being harvested in Sept but it's still good corn. Late corn always has more problems with sap beetles, earworms, and corn borers. As with any corn it needs to be side dressed with a high nitrogen fertilizer, generally twice at knee high stage and again when the tassels peek out.

I'm just trying to make up for my spring failed crop.

What is a good variety to try for the fall.

I've tried fall corn before but it's usually too hot and dry

when I try to plant it. (July/august) Also grass hoppers are a problem .

They're stripping down my spring field corn now.

I have planted Ambrosia se (78 days) my favorite, by July 10th and got a good harvest in Sept although as said with smaller ears. Typically planted 5 seeds per hole thinned to the strongest plant. Holes about 10-12" apart, weed and fertilize well, water as needed. Add 10 drops of mineral oil to the drying silks once pollination is complete to defeat worms & sap beetles.

My problem with spring corn . The grass hoppers.

the hoppers will chew the corn silks so it doesn't fill out the ears..

Also the early high heat (...100's) so it doesn't pollinate.

I try to put the water to the corn while it's starting to fill out ears. ,as in laying out the water hose in between rows and leave the water running. ( Like my Dad told me to do if you want corn).

Didn't work this year with the early heat wave in my locale.

I've known of older people that would succession plant corn in small blocks about 2 weeks apart all through the summer.

Haven't done it that way myself.

I got too many arms in the fire for that.

May 7he to the 2nd week in June is my window in Minnesota. I could of planted a third planting this year but didn't. When I plant a third planting its iffy for good corn, cooler temperatures and less sun really lowers the taste quality. Corn needs a lot of sun.

thanks kelvin. fall corn has been one of my weakness's for the fall garden. It's always too stinking hot and dry then with the grasshoppers chewing on things. The idea of a fall garden is to give a 2nd chance at things before frost/ then winter. But it's iffy. By then it's about time to put in cool season stuff , greens ....

and the sun angle keeps getting lower.

I occasionally grow corn for September harvest. I choose a second early variety like Silver Princess, Eden, Early Sunglo etc. Plant in July. My main problem is hot dry weather. I need a wet spell from a tropical storm coming through to get it started. I rarely get a frost before mid November so no worries there. I can control the insects. Still iffy with about a 75 % success rate. Heat and drought are my primary adversaries.

Okie, when I was a child (about a million years ago, LOL), Grandma always planted Golden Bantam first, then usually Silver Queen and some bicolor I don't remember of the name of, so we had corn for a longer period of time.

I hope I have time for my second planting to mature, my first planting of Mirai had germination of about half, so I planted some Peaches and Cream, which was the only seed I could still find here locally. I'm figuring that the Mirai will be ready about the time the P/C is tasseling, so hopefully I can avoid the cross pollination issue and get a late crop of the P/C. We'll see...

I planted my 8th planting a day ago. I got the tail end of Beryl last night and this mornibg...some leaning corn. About an inch or so of rain...some steady winds after the rain.

Wayne , I get corn laid over flat from all the storms I get.

Sometimes it straightens back up on it's own. Sometimes it stays crooked.

You can prevent that by running a one wire trellis along side a corn row, but it's too much bother for me.
