You forgot to mention the size of the room.

The guest room was 13x9 and the master is 12x10.

The bed will take up the entire room. For the guest room, you'd have 13" on each side of the bed.

For the master there would be 19 1/2 inches on each side of the bed.

Maybe you can decide based upon your current bedroom.

Think hard about decorating around something that is of good quality, but you no longer love. Maybe it is time to part with the bed?

Sadly too big for the guest room. Do you love everything else about it for your bedroom except for the color? When you say good quality do you mean it was expensive and a known brand, or do you think it will last another 20 years? If you love everything else about it and it is a really sturdy piece, get quotes for professionally painting it.

On the other hand, I've had a king in a 12 x 10 bedroom. The king was non-negotiable. But, the best way to have it not be such a visual beast is to just have a mattress and foundation with a headboard. Use a bedskirt to cover the sides and foot of the bed. It makes the room feel much larger. Even with this bed painted another, lighter color, it is still going to be a large visual obstacle.

Yea i have the full set with 2 dressers so cost a few thousand. its nice wood and has held up very well. just not sure i would get any money for it if i tried to sell.

i could put it in the master and see how it looks. if way too big then will look in to selling.

the headboard is also large so maybe removing that and replacing with something that takes up less spsce ?

that sounds like a good idea. why did they say not to paint the bed? I have also painted some items in the past abd have also turned out well. could you post a photo of the painted nightstand. would love to see!

Put the bed and the chunky dark matching pieces on FB marketplace. In the future, do not buy a matching set.

I dont have a picture of my nightstand (rectangle with drawers) but the table is on the other side of the be., far left is original reddish finish although not sure if you can see the lighter color all that well. So for ME, just painting what I had works. Definitely a lot brighter

There are many options but since Im impatient and not a big fan of painting i just used Parisian grey chalk paint as base (bought at Hobby Lobby). I let thoroughly dry then applied the liquid dark wax (in with the chalk paints). I used a paint brush to apply and I will see if I can find the video which helped a lot in terms of application). I let the wax set for 3/4 days then applied a mat varnish
