Small shower space with bench ?

We are currently remodeling a powder room/bathroom that bumps up to a staircase bulkhead. We are considering a shower that is about 36"W by 42"-48"L . However, due to the bulkhead, we'd need to build a bench over it, reducing the actual shower pan size/"standing space" to 36"x28", if that makes sense. Sorry I don't have any pictures, but the 42-48" wall would have a 28" door and 36" x 16" bench.

I can't decide if it'll feel tiny or the extra 16" of space front to back will give it the illusion of a normal shower. Note: this is a secondary bathroom off the mudroom. The bench (and a handheld shower head) would be ideal for rinsing feet and children! The rest of the very small bathroom would be a toilet and simple pedestal sink, about 18".
