Pine is difficult to paint (knots) and there's also the center diamond overlay so I wouldn't paint those cabinets. They appear to suit the casual space perfectly.

If I was going to do one thing, I'd unify the flooring and remove the carpet and kitchen flooring. Maybe pros will weigh in with a suggestion since I don't know if hardwood would be too much wood. The kitchen flooring reads busy and too much "matching the diamond shape" of the cabinets like a theme. I'd go for a classic, wide width pine flooring stained a medium tone brown, but not straying into gray at all with your reddish tone cabinets. I'd also add some additional lighting sources.

Think comprehensivly please. It's not just cabinets. You've got to get a vision of where you're going before doing anything.

The cabinets are fantastic! They are the best part of the kitchen. I love the diamond overlay pattern; I’ve never seen that and it’s amazing. I would not change them, they are just wonderful in your home. Maybe redo the flooring, new sink and faucet, new appliances, including a counter depth refrigerator and stove without the built in backsplash. A stove in a color (red?) would look great. Are those copper countertops?

I also kind of like them in your cabin!

I for one LOVE those cabinets~~ and it's because they are clearly part of the overall asthetic of the home from what i can tell looking at your ceiling and floors. love those kitchen tiles btw. what a breath of fresh air from the all-white copy paste repeat repeat. the worst thing ever is when people try to copy a "look" without considering the rest of their home. like the people who start throwing up random archest in their hallways.

Your floors are the odd man out, not the cabinets. Instead of spending money on the cabinets, I'd work on the floors. I think embracing the warm colors and the vintage style of the cabinets is the way to go.

I like the cabinets too. Maybe paint the walls and ceiling white. Don’t paint the beams. And just one flooring for all rooms if possible.

counters are pine, basically the same as cabinets. I just sanded and would like ideas for color to stain. I will be putting in a new floor and need help deciding on that also. This is just a summer place so don't want to go too crazy. I also would like to put up a back splash just to lighten the are up.

Replacing flooring for the entire area will help you expand the footprint of the kitchen. You desperately need storage and counter height work space. Move the table to the sunroom and replace it with an island with storage and four seats. A couple of budget island options if you go with furniture pieces: 1.) butt a counter top table on one end for seating; 2.) Place two small islands next to each other to create one long surface. Or you could set base cabinets back-to-back to add storage on both sides and enough countertop overhang so stools can be tucked underneath. If you build an island, run electrical to it while you're working on the floors.

Your cabinets look nice. New hardware will help tidy them up - replace the drawer glides with full extension hardware to take advantage of every inch inside and install new hinges so the doors close completely.

You could try painting the backsplash as Phase I to brighten up the kitchen. Use the savings to add under counter lighting.

Clutter kills small spaces - clear the countertops of everything that isn't used at least once a day and clear off the top of the refrigerator.

Work in getting some extra lighting to brighten up the wood. The counters could be an off the shelf stock laminate in a brighter color, instead of also wood. So many good suggestions! I agree that the cabinets are perfect for your cabin, and that a checkerboard floor would be very nice. I love the table and chairs too!

Not crazy about the appliances, but if they work, then let them be. Once you need to replace them, consider vintage-y looking ones, like Big Chill.

But the lack of storage and clutter is a big problem. In my vacation home, I'm constantly going through closets, cabinets and drawers to cull things I don't use much or really need. We considered an add-on recently but it just wasn't worth the time and money, so we started buying cabinet inserts to organize our kitchen stuff. We also repurposed a tall cabinet we had in the family room to the kitchen/dining area to help with the overflow. You might consider finding a storage unit either online or in a thrift store for a similar function.

I think you should lean into the country cabin vibe. Get a little funky with the tile and colors.

cabinets are fantastic… maybe a good scrub with wood soap and then oil them.. clean up the hardware also, just scrub at them. try some of the stick on tile backsplash amd counter top.. for less tahn $50 you can try out new stuff. paint the table (or at least the legs and add a bright table cloth.

I do not have a separate dining area. The kitchen is a small part of one large room approx. 25x24. This serves as a kitchen/dining and living room space. I am in the process of looking at flooring for the entire room. I just sanded down my countertop (same wood as cabinets) and wonder if I should clear coat or stain is darker?

Peggy, for the counters you have to use a food grade coating, so you would use tung oil or mineral oil. Waterlox (click here) is a combination of tung oil and resin, and it is foodsafe.

I see the charm in the space, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be updated, made more user friendly and more beautiful. Your post is on the cabinets. What would you like to change? If you could snap your fingers tomorrow and have a better space, what would the cabinets look like?

I think it’s great that you are considering changing the flooring. What options are you looking at?

This cabin has fir almost everywhere, and distinctive cabinets, but they have a stone backsplash and a much lighter counter. They give contrast to the space and break up the all-wood for a lighter feel.

Late to thread, but the cabinets are the best part of the kitchen in my opinion. Super cool for a cabin. Wood floor is not too much wood in my view.

counters are great, just a high sheen clear coat will make them pop. just dont use them as butcher block/cutting boards. might try white enemal hardware…

The sanded counter tops look fantastic. Kind of makes me want to see all the cabinets sanded down. You’ve lifted off the yellow. I know you still have to Waterlox them and that will make them darker, but they look great.

I have another question? Should I put up a backsplash and if so I can end it at the counter. My question is what to do with the wall behind the stove and the fridge. I also agree tht the floor I picked is too dark. I will check out other options in a lighter shade.

People generally do not tile behind a fridge, and behind a range they do so if they have the depth, from counter height to upper cabinets/vent hood.

Tile would either end with a Schluter edge (this has to be installed before the tile) OR it gets a bullnose trim tile (a tile with a rounded edge).
