I see him active on the tree, conifer, name that plant and a couple others frfrom time to time, but je seems less active wwith us hosta people for some reason…..does he think we know everything by now?? lol lol

Talked with Ken yesterday. He planning to make a trip down to see me shortly so I can pick his brains on my hostas.

Yes, good to know he's ok. Was just thinking about him, wondering why he hasn't been on the perennials forum.

I don't think Ken grows hosta anymore. He never mentioned it (that I noticed), that he had moved. However, I think that when he lived on the upper peninsula was when he had the huge hosta beds.

He doesn't mention growing hosta anymore. He also doesn't post any photos of hosta.

Maybe with his heart attack, he lost interest in writing about hosta.

That's just my guess, as I have no personal knowledge (he doesn't share his personal business with me).

Lots of things happen to us in life that provoke big changes….. a heart attack is one of them. Remember him complaining about having to give up smoking (of course) but also, coffee. I got the impression he dearly loved both of those things. But, we don’t know what physical limitations he may have as a result that has affected his gardening. Many of us have also struggled with health issues and some of us are constantly reevaluating how do things better but smarter as well. I have always appreciated his knowledge. I have learned a lot about hostas from him especially when I was new to the forum and he was quite active. I do miss his snarky sense of humor and like it when he does drop in from time to time. He seems more active on the tree and name that plant forums.

Drop us a line ken and show us some old photos of past beauties!!

I will always associate hostas with Ken whether or not he even thinks about them any more.

That’s so true! My husband just said that I had left that hosta on the driveway long enough, that it had proved to me that it wanted to live.

I always thought he was joking when he said this and commented so. He quickly responded by saying “no joke”…..
He referred to one of the infamous hosta growers (of course I can’t remember who lol) who said throwing them on the driveway actually stimulated root growth, somehow…… I have never tried it, but have a few I should try doing it with.

I should try it with my minis. I’ve killed Cameo, Pure Heart and Blue Elf, plus a few I’m forgetting. There are a few of the little guys I’ve been successful with but not many

Hey Ken-

Only about 500 miles from Toledo to the UP. Not 3K. I have relatives way up there. Yoopers. It was Bruce Banyai (RIP) helping his mom Pauline (originator of Gold Standard) who referred to having them in the driveway. Ken just drove over them!!! ;-)

Ken - I was down in your neck of the woods last week on business. Nice drive. No time to cruise through the Irish Hills, though. Oh well.

Ken. I enjoyed your visit Friday. Let's try to not make it so long between visits and maybe a little earlier in the season when the gardens don't look so tired and worn out.
